Editorial Reviews

VOYA
My ninth grade soccer-playing daughter, Joanne, picked up this book as soon as she saw it. Flipping through the guide to more than forty notable female athletes and a handful of important events and trends in women's sports, she first turned to the chapters about the athletes she knows best: Mia Hamm, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Wilma Rudolph, Marion Jones, and a few others. Then, to my delight, she turned her attention to women athletes that she has never heard of, such as Ora Washington, Babe Didrikson Zaharias, and Althea Gibson. In most cases, the four- to five-page entries kept her attention with a nice blend of biography and sports career information complemented by one or two black-and-white photographs. Though the book held her interest for several days, it was not the kind of book she would read from start to finish. She enjoyed leafing through its pages and stopping to read when a name or photo caught her eye. This book will certainly appeal to other female athletes, and it provides a valuable and convenient single reference source to a number of women athletes from 1896 to the present. The narrative information in each entry is general and highlights each athlete's most important successes in sports. The writing is uneven and at times redundant, but it is likely that female athletes who read this book will overlook the flaws in writing and will welcome this guide to extraordinary women athletes from a wide variety of sports.
