From the Colonial era to the present day, women have played many important roles in journalism. This collective biography provides a look at political pundits, suffrage activists, war reporters, gossip and advice columnists, and today's television "superstars". The lives examined include Ida B. Wells-Barnett, Nellie Bly, Hedda Hopper, Ann Landers, Abigail Van Buren, Margaret Bourke-White, Barbara Walters, Cokie Roberts, and many more.

Profiles the life and work of notable women journalists, including Sarah Hale, Margaret Fuller, and Nellie Bly.

Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Maura Bresnahan
The latest addition to the Extraordinary People series highlights women who have carved out careers as reporters, columnists, publishers, correspondents, and journalists from Colonial times through the present day. The book comprises biographical sketches (average length four pages) of the women who made names for themselves in fields most often dominated by men. The achievements of these women are seen in the historical context of their times. Readers learn of the challenges women encountered getting articles published under their own names and the important role women journalists played in the suffrage movement. The entries are arranged in chronological order and cover a wide range of personalities. One can trace the rise of women in these professions from the suffrage movement through World War II to the media-driven 1990s. Today's youth will not be familiar with the pioneers, including Sara Hale and Anne Newport Royall, but they may recognize these modern journalists: Abigail Van Buren, Erma Bombeck, and Barbara Walters. Students looking for an introduction to a particular personality or an overview of the topic will be well served by this work. The text is clearly and concisely written and the accompanying black-and-white photographs create a crisp, friendly layout. An appendix includes brief descriptions of sixty-four women not covered in the main text. In addition, there is a glossary of journalistic terms readers will find helpful, a bibliography of more in-depth works, and a list of organizations and Internet sites that have information on women journalists. Recommended for both its information and inspiration. Appendix. Photos. Glossary. Bibliography. VOYA Codes: 5Q 3P M J S (Hard to imagine it being any better written, Will appeal with pushing, Middle School-defined as grades 6 to 8, Junior High-defined as grades 7 to 9 and Senior High-defined as grades 10 to 12).

Gr 7-10Price-Groff profiles well-known and lesser-known figures from diverse areas of journalism from the Revolution to the present day. She describes the lives and careers of over 50 reporters, publishers, humorists, columnists, photographers, and television journalists. Chapters are short but full of useful information and are accompanied by large black-and-white photos. Because these women's chosen field intersects with so many other subjects, students learn about American and world history, politics, and culture as they read these short biographies. They are good reads, often including tales of daring and triumph over long odds. Foreign correspondent Sigrid Lillian Schultz revealed and foiled Nazi plots. Charlayne Hunter-Gault fought segregation laws to obtain her journalism degree and subsequently won two Emmy Awards. An appendix gives sketches of an additional 64 journalists. A list of organizations and Internet sites related to women, history, and journalism is included. Good for reports or leisure reading.Rebecca O'Connell, Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh

    Amazing Book!

This book is a amazing book! I love all the details that they show about reporters we didn't even know about. I would recommend it to anyone who loves non-fiction, and loves learning new things and new people.
