Overview

Waller's first album falls into the cracks of something that seems to be attempting to catch the slightly alternative singer/songwriter market and also gets a slice of adult contemporary radio play at the same time. Whether that's a conscious strategy or not, who knows? But at any rate, his songs are drifting, predominantly love-minded meditations with an air of uncertainty and doubt. They're not as impressive as his singing, which has a very wide range, particularly at the top end, where he sounds almost effeminate. The disparate arrangements -- gnarly rock guitars here, echoing soundtrack guitars there, occasional soul-rock rhythm grooves, middle-of-the-road keyboards, and female backup vocals at other times -- seem indicative not so much of an eclecticism as a lack of honed focus and worldview.
