Overview

Extreme NXT: Extending the LEGO MIDSTORMS NXT to the Next Level is for intermediate-level users of NXT who would like to advance their capabilities by learning some of the basics of electronics. Plenty of examples are provided, and easy-to-follow instructions are included for building over 15 different sensors.

This makes a great reference for the NXT hardware interfaces. Examples even come complete with multiple, alternative NXT languages. The book is also abundant with illustrations.

Meet the Author

Philippe Hurbain got his first Mindstorms kit in 2000, and soon his electronics background pushed him to build new and original sensors for the RCX. His web site shows how to build these sensors and includes a lot of technical information on the original Mindstorms kit. In 2006, he was selected as a beta tester for the new NXT that he received several months before the official release.

Michael Gasperi has been an expert in LEGO Mindstorms sensors since they were first introduced in 1998. His popular web site and contributing chapters to Extreme Mindstorms (Apress, 2000) have guided many people through the process of building their own extensions to the kit.

When you can't buy it, build it.

Building robots with LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT with the the standard parts will only take you so far. Eventually you are going to want to take your robot beyond the parts provided in the factory sealed box. This book has the information on how to make this possible. The most important information contained in the book is the pinout names and specifications for the sensor and motor ports, All the examples and projects use this information to communicate with the NXT block. There is lot of information about the NXT that is well explained and exemplified with the projects. This book will remain a source of reference as I research sensor and control designs for my LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT robots. But even if you never pickup a soldering iron, this book can give a better understanding of the the sensors you buy and ways to use them.
