Children's LiteratureAs part of the "Extreme Sports" series, this library-bound selection is a welcome addition to the growing coverage of extreme sports, which were put on the map by the X Gamesboth winter and summer. Organized into five parts, this selection covers the basics of riding big waves, a look at the waves themselves, tricks of the trade, what it takes to surf in the pro circuit, and a catch-all look at other aspects of the sport. Color photos on every page illustrate big-wave surfing; they also provide visual descriptions of the range of techniques, from how to hang ten to tow-in surfing. The writing, like the photos, is vivid and focused on the skills required to master this man-against-nature sport; as a result, the writing draws the reader in and easily sustains reading interest. There is a thorough list of reference materials at the back of the book. 2004, National Geographic, Ages 9 to 12.
