Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Sylvia Firth
Youngsters may not know anything about of this major oil spill in 1989, but they certainly know about The BP spill and will be interested in learning about this incident. This title in the "True Book Series" is intended for upper elementary youngsters. The book opens with two true-or-false questions that are meant to catch the interest of the readers. The Exxon Valdez tanker was carrying over fifty-three million gallons of oil when it ran aground on a reef in Prince William Sound, Alaska. Chapter one explains why response was so slow and how weather and high tides caused even larger problems. The next chapter describes the effect of the spill on plants and animals, the various methods used to capture the oil and the devastation to the region's economy. Another chapter points out all the human errors that caused this disaster and includes a timeline for the event. The last chapter covers who is to blame, what is being done to prevent more spills and how the native Chugach people have had their lives totally changed because of this event. In addition to many clear, sharp, colored photos, the book contains a page of statistics, glossary, index, bibliography, web sites and possible places to visit. Interesting facts, highlighted by arrows, are found on almost every page. Teachers will find this volume useful for science class while students will find it helpful for research. The high price may preclude adding it to the buy list, especially if other material is already in the collection. Reviewer: Sylvia Firth
