Bradley, Ryan, and Davis, Private Investigaors was the most unique detective agency in Philadelphia, because Kevin Bradley and his partners, Evan and Lily, were not the mere mortals they appeared to be. Brad and Lily were powerful demons, and Evan was Brad's half-demon/half-mortal son. Solving earthly crimes ought to have been a cinch for them. Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Maura Bresnahan
This dark mystery is sure to appeal to fantasy fans and armchair detectives alike. Eyes of the Empress brings back Kevin Bradley and Evan Davis, who were first featured in Bacon-Smith's Eye of the Daemon (DAW, 1996/VOYA June 1996). Set in a multi-layered universe filled with the best and the worst of human (and inhuman) nature, the plot centers on the disappearance of centuries-old crystals associated with a former Dowager Empress of China. When art professor and board member of the Philadelphia Art Museum Harry Li asks Kevin and Evan to protect the remaining crystal in Philadelphia and find the two crystals already missing, the investigators soon realize how deadly and far-reaching the implications of such a search can be.

The plot is fast paced and tightly written, quickly drawing the reader into the worlds that the detectives inhabit. The imagery is amazing, and in many ways sensual; the smells and sights of Chinese cooking abound when the plot shifts to Chinatown. While readers of the previous title will be glad to see the return of the demonic duo, this sequel can be read as a stand-alone novel as well. Most likely to appeal to genre fans at advanced reading levels, this book is recommended for older audiences in both school and public libraries.

VOYA Codes: 5Q 3P S A/YA (Hard to imagine it being better written, Will appeal with pushing, Senior High-defined as grades 10 to 12 and adults).

Library Journal
Called in to prevent the theft of a valuable crystal from a Philadelphia art museum, private investigators Kevin Bradley, Evan Davis, and Lily Ryan attempt to fulfill their commission without revealing their true natures as daemons of the spheres beyond the material world. Bacon-Smith's lushly textured and intricately constructed sequel to Eyes of the Daemon (DAW, 1996) should appeal to fans of modern gothic fantasy.
