Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
The underdog-with-exceptional-ability-makes-good plot is typical of boys' manga, but seeing another country's view of a great American competitive sport-in this case, football-provides added entertainment. Since football isn't a popular sport in Japan, Sena Kobayakawa's school's team only has two players: Ryokan, a large, friendly boy who dreams of someday competing in the Christmas bowl game, and Hiruma, the quarterback better known for frightening the underclassmen. At 5'1", Sena has always been smaller than his classmates, so he's been used as their gofer and errand boy. As a result, he's developed outstanding running speed. He wants to be team manager, but he winds up competing under the name Eyeshield 21 to keep other teams from knowing his name and stealing him away. The three must recruit enough players to form a team of 11 in order to play their first game. The thin-line art style gives the players a certain delicate beauty, while exaggerated reactions put readers directly in touch with the characters' emotions. Game scenes are drawn in loving detail that captures football's violent grandeur. This promises to be Viz's third sports hit, joining popular series on tennis and soccer. (Mar.) I read this manga online and I fell in love with it from the get

I read this manga online and I fell in love with it from the get-go. I liked it so much that I had to buy all the volumes. Having it online was simply not good enough for me. There are a lot of characters, but they are all so fantastic and so different from each other that it doesn't even matter that there are so many. If you don't like American football, then obviously don't read because this entire manga is pretty much about the sport. If you do decide to pick up this wonderful manga, then I can guarantee that you will root for the Deimon Devil Bats to take it all the way to the Christmas Bowl.

    Best NFL Literture EVER!

Little Sena is nothing but a gopher, picked on by bigger students to run their errands. What this has done, however, is transformed him into one of the fastest runners in all of Japan. Thanks to the efforts of kind-hearted lineman Kurita and demon genuis and quarterback Hiruma of the Deimon Devil Bats American Football Club, he gets pushed onto the field and becomes the legendary Running Back - Eyeshield 21. GREAT story. GREAT characters. GREAT games. I love football in general, but have never really been into sports manga before I picked up Eyeshield 21. The aces for each team they go up against are as colorful and talented as Deimon's own squad, and although the story is about Sena and his growth as a person and player, the surronding characters all have their due to the point where Sena isn't even the top voted charater 'go Hiruma!!'. There is no way you cannot be hooked on this manga. Also, if you're not a football fan or know the rules and such, no problem. It's written for even the clueless of the game to understand the rules, the positions, and the drama of strategies behind this great sport. ^_^

    Great sports manga!

Eyeshield 21 is a popular manga that has been running for a few years now. What makes it so appealing are the great characters and the fact that American football has never been used in a manga before. There is entertainment and great football action in every page. This is definitely one of the best sports manga out there and I recommend that people interested in this title to just check a few pages out-you'll be hooked.
