DK gives a new look to the series that forever changed the nonfiction genre and set the standard for highly informative visual guides. This volume, and those to follow in future seasons, forms part of an indispensable library for the whole family. Dorling Kindersley has produced another excellent reference source for the art enthusiast. (Book Report, November/December 1999)

It would be difficult to find a public library in the U.S. without at least one Eyewitness Book--many libraries own hundreds. The combination of on-target subject matter, with books on most of the subjects that interest both children and adults, and impeccable book design have made a dominant force that has changed the world of nonfiction publishing. (Booklist, October 15, 1999)

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Another addition to the "Eyewitness Art" series that has been concentrating on modern masters (e.g., Manet), Bernard's book heavily emphasizes Van Gogh's early years. Since the artist discovered his personal style and completed his most famous works only during the last three years of his life, this becomes a reasonable approach. The slow striving toward artistic enlightenment within an otherwise most frustrating existence makes Van Gogh's later accomplishments all the more amazing. Perhaps the most interesting insight given is Van Gogh's early fascination with popular but second-rate artists such as Millet. The collection and reproduction of background material and paintings is busy, but useful.
