Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
In many classrooms and libraries "Eyewitness Books" have come to mean reliably documented and thoroughly researched nonfiction titles on a range of subjects of interest to young readers. This book carries on the tradition. From details about the pietra dura work in the Taj Mahal to Robert Clive's contemptuous dismissal of the inhabitants of Bengal, the history of the subcontinent is covered in the first half of the book, in the trademark Eyewitness combination of text and sumptuous photo-illustration. Village and urban life, art and sculpture, traditional crafts, fabrics and jewelry, are aspects of material culture covered here. They are presented in a manner that exemplifies the diversity of traditions and customs prevalent across the country. Literary, musical and dance traditions follow, with an easy transition to the one-of-a-kind, quintessentially Indian movie industry. Illustrations are selected with care and a concern for focusing interest—for instance, Jayalalitha the "towering" politician in contrast to the dwarfed pedestrians in a southern urban scene is bound to provoke both questions from young readers unfamiliar with the context, and a smile from those in the know! The obligatory food and fauna pages sacrifice diversity to the constraints of space, although even here specificity to region is pointed out wherever possible. It is also nice to see the "curry" myth laid to rest. Ancient tradition and modern innovation combine in the pages on science and technology, and medicine. The photograph of the traditionally dressed astrologer casting a horoscope on a laptop is a sight to behold! The sections on religions, festivals and rites feel a little hurried, but on the whole, thisbook packs a wealth of information into its 64 pages and is a keeper. Index and photo credits are included. 2002, DK Publishing,

Gr 4-8-Exquisite photographs and concise information introduce readers to the history, traditions, and culture of this nation. Two-page overviews tackle a spectrum of topics from the first civilizations through the impact of technology on today's society. Each section includes a paragraph of information and numerous, colorful photographs and reproductions with informative captions. While none of the topics are covered in any real depth, the book will provide an inviting introduction and visual transport to the country with pictures of city and village life, the arts, "Mouthwatering cuisine," and more. However, readers interested in female adornment may be disappointed not to find any explanation of bindi or menudi. Nonetheless, this book will be a useful addition.-Alida F. Good pictorial book about India's tradition

it is a good pictorial book for children to know about the tradition and arts of India. Could have been better by putting more detailed description of Hindu temples and art and by removing the marginal Mogul structures.

    Entertaining but historically controversial

Nice book that skims the surface of the richness and diversity of India's cultural heritage. Particularly disappointing is the reference to the 'Aryan Invasion' from 'Central Asia', a theory that dates back to colonial times and that has been disproved.
