Editorial Reviews

Library Journal

Former U.S. Navy Commander Kuehn and Giangreco (coauthor, Eyewitness Vietnam) present the entire story of World War II in the Pacific, including an introductory chapter setting the stage before December 7, 1941. All of the combatants are represented here; what sets this book apart from others is the extensive use of first-person narrative, which makes up the majority of the text. Hundreds of photographs (some in color) and informative sidebars covering, e.g., Wake Island and Japan's plan for Midway, supplement the text. Kuehn and Giangreco also describe specific U.S. units and include color images of their insignias. This is the grim, human story of the Pacific war, one that was fought with no quarter asked or given. Produced in collaboration with the Library of Congress Veterans History Project, an accompanying CD contains selected interviews with veterans, which lends the story an up-close and personal feel. Recommended for all collections.

    Long Overdue!

This coffee table book is easy to read and follow. Many, today, think of World War II as a "European" War with the Pacific taking on the feeling of being an anecdote.
Having had 3 close relatives fight, all combat infantry who saw action in the Pacific on the front lines in the heat and humidity and malaria-filled tropical jungles, surviving banzai and kamikaze attacks and live to come back home, says that is a false opinion. It is only now that writers and historians are realizing that the Pacific War was a much deadlier and harder fought war to win than in Europe.
The enemy was fanatical, and, for all intents and pursposes, this war was really a war fought 90% by the United States on sea, land, and air by "ourselves". FDR placed a "secondary" importance on the Pacific, yet America perserved and won it with our "can do" attitude. And for us today, this war was America's first encounter with "suicidal terrorists" who didn't care about anyone, even themselves.
Truly this book gives those eyewitness accounts by the men and women who fought it that we, as a nation, need to record and hear so America does not forget what happened in the world's biggest and deepest ocean with all those small islands.
This book is a primer everyone should read to get a better understanding of how America won this war practically ... single-handed. And won it against a determined and suicidal enemy. who many times never acted as a rational human being, and had no regard for his own life and the lives of his enemies or even his own countrymen ... meaning women and children. Simply done, superb, well done!
