Editorial Reviews

VOYA
Although brief, Lazo's biography of Fitzgerald is incredibly complete, especially for the intended audience. Young people will have no difficulty reading this book, which is written in clear, lucid, and lively language that carries vastly important details pertinent to Fitzgerald's writing. Students' own interpretations might also be influenced by the author's placing in context certain aspects of Fitzgerald's life, especially as they pertain to his youth. From the origin of his name (Frances Scott Key was a distant cousin) to how he talked his way into Princeton to his glamorous but ultimately detrimental lifestyle, Fitzgerald is empathetically portrayed as a talented writer plagued by human frailties. Such a representation will not be lost on young people. Lazo takes great pains to mesh the person of Fitzgerald with the persona. She does an excellent job of blending the private and the public lives of the celebrated American author to show how the two are inseparable. Plagued by debt and ill-health caused by a lifetime of heavy drinking and endless parties, Fitzgerald emerges as a product of societal influence that, in the end, affected not only his behavior but his writing as well. Young people will relate to Fitzgerald and find information helpful to them as researchers. The many photos and extensive resources will be enough to point high school students to everything they need for a complete project on Fitzgerald. This biography is a must-have for any library. Biblio. Photos. Further Reading. Gr 6-9-This well-documented book offers a fascinating glimpse into the acclaimed author's early years, unremarkable academic record, extravagant lifestyle, and work. Numerous black-and-white photos of Fitzgerald, his family, and other figures in his life accompany the text. Students, particularly reluctant readers, who read this enjoyable book for reports will appreciate the many listings of online resources and suggestions for further reading.-Kathleen A.
