Dès Birdman, son premier roman, elle a terrifié ses lecteurs. Cette histoire de tueur en série sur laquelle enquêtait Jack Caffery, un inspecteur hanté par le drame de son enfance - la disparition de son frère peut-être enlevé par leur voisin pédophile-, brillait par son habileté et sa noirceur. Dans L'Homme du soir, elle confrontait encore son personnage à une affaire atroce. Puis il y a eu un joyau noir, Tokyo, pour lequel elle a puisé dans les souvenirs de son séjour dans la capitale japonaise. Ce livre, autour du massacre par les troupes nipponnes de la population de Nankin, en 1937, flirtait déjà avec le fantastique, sillon qu'elle a ensuite creusé dans Pig Island, avant de revenir à Caffery.
Si elle manie l'horreur avec talent, on ne peut limiter son oeuvre à cette dimension. En effet, ses personnages principaux vivent avec le poids d'un passé très lourd, victimes ou témoins de tragédies. Leur propre douleur leur permet d'affronter le Mal, mais leurs tourments sont réveillés par chaque affaire. Derrière des intrigues efficaces perce une émotion qui donne à ses romans un écho troublant.
