To some, it's a natural instinct in times of trial.
To others, it's a daily ritual, practiced since childhood.
For some, it's a boring exercise, full of distractions.
For others, it's as simple as calling Dad on the phone.
Prayer. It's the way we talk to God. It's the way we listen for God's guidance. It's more than just a task-it's a privilege! But, as any teenager will tell you, it's not always easy.
Sometimes it's hard to know if God is listening. At other times, distractions can cloud our minds. And when it doesn't seem as if requests are being answered, prayer can feel pretty discouraging.
These four studies will help you guide your teenagers into a deeper understanding of prayer. In each study, students will experience a different creative approach to prayer, and they'll come to see prayer as an adventure that helps them draw closer to God.
In the first study, teenagers will learn that prayer is critical in the development of a trusting relationship with God. By studying the example of Hannah, students will learn that they can get to know God better by sharing their honest thoughts and feelings with him and by listening to his guidance. They'll consider how open and honest communication builds trust in their relationships with friends and family, and they'll relate that to their communication with God and the type of relationship they're developing with him. In this study, teenagers will experience a creative prayer time in which they'll use unique objects and activities to express their thoughts to God.
The second study, students will explore some of the circumstances and emotions that can cause them to feel far away from God. They'll look at the story of the prodigal son, and they'll discover that prayer is a way to reconnect with God-it's a way to "come home." Teenagers will understand that God truly listens to their prayers, even when their feelings tell them otherwise. The study ends by giving teenagers and their prayer partners a chance to talk to God.
In the third study, teenagers will examine some of the common distractions that can detour their prayers. They'll talk about some of the distractions they struggle with, and they'll explore how the biblical principles of silence, solitude, and fasting can help them focus on God in prayer. Students will have an opportunity to write letters to God and will take time to think of "prayer triggers" that can serve as reminders to focus on God throughout the day.
The final study of this book will help students understand that God always answers their prayers. First, the students will have a chance to decide what they really think about prayer by exploring different opinions on the topic. Then they'll look closely at what Jesus and Paul had to say about prayer, and they'll work together to answer questions about prayer. Finally, teenagers will have an opportunity to plan a weeklong prayer challenge that will help them explore the truth that God really does answer prayers.
Faith 4 Life Prayer will equip students with knowledge and specific strategies to grow by leaps and bounds in their prayer lives. But even more important, these studies will help your teenagers experience prayer in life-changing ways.
