Overview

When a savage creature known only as the Adversary conquered the fabled lands of legends and fairy tales, all of the infamous inhabitants of folklore were forced into exile.

Disguised among the normal citizens of modern-day New York, these magical characters created their own secret society-within an exclusive luxury apartment building on Manhattan's Upper West Side-called Fabletown. But when Snow White's party-girl sister, Rose Red, is apparently murdered, it is up to Bigby, Fabletown's sheriff, and a reformed and pardoned Big Bad Wolf, to determine if the culprit is Bluebeard, Rose's ex-lover and notorious wife killer, or Jack, her current live-in boyfriend and former beanstalk-climber.

This Deluxe Edition collects the first two trade paperbacks of the series, issues 1-10, and Bill Willingham's prose story from Vol. 1, as well as character sketches.

I took an interest in this series because of the game "A Wolf Among Us," and I'm glad I did! Having played the currently-released episodes of the game, and read through the first story-arc, I find it's a comic series I can't put down! And coming from someone who doesn't generally read a lot of comics, that's saying something! The characters are all well-developed, darker versions of their fairy-tale selves. The author provides exposition without slowing down plot progression, and the unique, magical qualities of the fables allow for some rather... eye-popping moments. HOWEVER, be warned that these aren't your grandma's fairytales. Fables is dark, gritty, and mature. The characters behave exactly as you would expect from the residents of midtown Manhattan, and that isn't always a good thing. Needless to say there's plenty of blood, a mild amount (thus far at least) of swearing, and sexual situations (including a rather odd pairing in the second story-arc), but if you can deal with that, the stories themselves are sure to keep you hooked!

    Fun and Intense! Definitely Recommend

I am in love with this graphic novel series already and I just finished this first Volume. If you are familiar with the TV series Once Upon A Time this has a similar concept, but was made first and is a bit darker. The fable worlds were attacked and taken over by the Adversary. When many of the fables were killed the rest fled to the Mundane World (which is our world, the human world). The last 200 years the Fables have lived with the Mundy's (humans). There are 2 major areas: the human looking fables live in New York City, the fables who look like animals or some other look live on the Farm in upstate New York, which is a huge amount of land so the mundys don't stumble across it. King Cole is the Mayor of all the fables, with Snow White as his second in the city and the person who does the hard work where King Cole is the glad hander and face of the fables. Snow White is a hard business woman who had divorced Prince Charming a century ago after she found him sleeping with her sister, Rose Red. Throughout the years she has hardened and loves to swear. This is a great series and I can't wait to continue reading the next Volume.
