I am a professional fabric dyer for the costume department of a major dance company and have been in the business for several years. When I was starting out as a costume crafts person while still in college, a designer handed me a tattered copy of this book and told me to go dye something for a show. I had never really dyed anything before, but I looked up the section on dyeing cotton and took a deep breath. Luckily, the directions were straight-forward enough that I was able, on my first try, to create a product that passed a picky designer's muster. Since then, I have relied on Ms. Dryden's book whenever I have a new project- it gives you straight-forward instructions for painting and dyeing fabrics, as well as neat effects for a variety of projects. The pictures are helpful and the prose is well-written. While it is written with stage costumes in mind, this book is a great reference for anyone interested in working with fabrics
