Many active nanophotonic meta-devices and research tools critically depend on availability of emitters that can be brought to close vicinity of resonating plasmonic nanostructures or other electric and magnetic hot spots. Lanthanides are a family of 15 chemical elements plus scandium and yttrium whose atomic numbers range from 57 to 71 and they consist of the elements in the f-block of period six in the periodic table. In this book we will explore these materials and understand their properties and applications.
