Fabulous Fashions of the 1960s

Overview

In the 1960s, some women liked to show off in miniskirts and go-go boots. Others preferred the more conservative look of First Lady Jaqueline Kennedy who donned neutral-colored two-piece suits and pillbox hats. Women had sky-high hairstyles like the beehive or down-to-earth, long, straight hair. African Americans combined traditional African cloth with modern styles and fought for civil rights. Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Susan Cotter
The 1960s are famous for hippies and the Beatles, but there was actually quite a bit more going on in this decade than just free love. Covering all the different styles that were popular in such a diverse era is difficult, but Niven does a good job touching on the many fashion influences from First Lady Jackie Kennedy to the Black Power Movement. Each chapter is broken up into shorter segments, most of which are no longer than a page, with full color photographs to illustrate the text. Niven points out that we can learn a lot about what was happening in a culture by looking at fashion. Betsey Johnson's transparent dress certainly spoke volumes! Both women's and men's fashion are covered in this book that is filled with good information and fascinating trivia about a most interesting period in history. Contains a timeline, glossary, books and websites for further reading and an index. Part of the "Fabulous Fashions of the Decades" series. Reviewer: Susan Cotter
