Editorial Reviews

Brandon Sun
For any reason, in any season, this book provides the perfect recipe for lots of fun.
From The Critics
Using the techniques outlined in this book, readers can pretend they are creatures from another world or pirates sailing the seven seas. Patricia Silver offers excellent tips on creating faces for make-believe characters. Step-by-step pictures and instructions assist readers to produce sixteen fascinating characters. Material lists, tips list, and safety lists will give kids a jump-start on face painting. Most necessary materials can be found around the house, and face paint is available at most craft and hobby stores. A great resource for stage make-up. Part of the "Kids Can Do It" series. 2000, Kids Can Press, $12.95. Ages 8 to 12. Reviewer: D. Cannon SOURCE: Parent Council Volume 8

Face painting is popular and fun, and this book lays out ideas and activities for creating 15 faces and costumes. The materials that need to be gathered before starting are listed first, and most items, including paints, are simple to find and economical to purchase. The instructions are pleasantly laid out on facing pages and include a photograph of the final look, what the budding artist will need, a step-by-step painting guide, and suggested costume pieces for more fun. The faces include a traditional mime, clown, and hobo as well as an original lion, cat, dog and scary skeleton. This book is one of many that encourage face painting. With just 15 faces and no paints included, it is better suited as a secondary book about the subject, rather than a primer. 2000, Kids Can Press, $12.95 and $5.95. Ages 8 to 13. Reviewer: Dia L. Gr 1-4-A wonderful introduction to this fun activity. She begins by firing readers' imaginations with, "You can become-," then digs right in explaining what supplies are needed. She includes step-by-step instructions for 16 of the most commonly requested faces, rules for safety, and the all-important cleanup tips. Clear, full-color photographs and drawings of children in the makeup accompany the instructions. These simple illustrations are charming and helpful, leaving no doubt as to what supplies are needed. Except for the face paint itself, most of these items are readily available. If you already have a good book on the subject, this one is probably not needed. However, it is an excellent choice for beginners, providing basic information and delightful examples.-Cynde Marcengill, Horry County Memorial Library, Surfside Beach, SC Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.
