Editorial Reviews

bookwenches.com
Bonnie Turner's Face the Winter Naked is a beautifully written tale of strength, hope, love, and despair. Within the pages of this book, the era of the Great Depression unfolds into sharply focused reality, and the people who were impacted the most by that time of financial desperation come to life. Ms. Turner is an excellent storyteller, and I found myself completely immersed in her narrative.

I'm a very picky reader and I don't finish books I don't like -- my reading time is too precious to waste. Reading FACE THE WINTER NAKED was a wonderful way to spend my time. It's well-written, vivid, engaging and heart-tugging. I went to sleep at night thinking of Daniel and LaDaisy , the main characters, and woke up in the morning ready to read more. I raced to the end of the book to know what happened but was sorry when I read the last page because my time with the characters was over.
Joan Johnson
Spot-On Depiction

My parents lived through the Depression era, and many of the stories they told me were directly depicted in this remarkable book... These are real people, with real problems, in a world they didn't create but did their best to survive, and the author is to be commended for writing an insightful book that could have, but didn't, become maudlin. This book is proof that what doesn't kill us makes us stronger.
Joanne Donaldson
Great thought provoking book

This is a book for those who enjoy connecting with all elements of our humanity...pathos, sorrow, hurt, forgiveness, love and hope. Anyone who has lived the near 70 years I have can relate as we have faced most of life's pains and truly understand that we all suffer from much of the histories and characteristics of these characters. I could not put this book down and did not want it to end.
Linda Johnson
Heart-breaking

Face The Winter Naked was an eye opener. Such a sad time. LaDaisy's story could have been the true life story of my Grandma Eva Blue. My grandfather left her to raise 3 little boys by herself. Heros come in every shape & size. This is a work of fiction but Ms Turner could easily have written my grandmothers story.

Daniel suffered from PTSD... This book will haunt you, long after you finish.
R. Correll
I swan, I love this book!

I'm not sure if I've ever seen the mild oath "I swan" in a book before, but my late mother used it often. The language in "Face the Winter Naked" really spoke to me in a familiar tongue. The story reminded me of stories told by my late parents about the Great Depression... my grandma would never turn away a hungry mouth showing up at their door.

Thank you Bonnie for such a fine read.

PS: I'm a 60 plus year old male.

    A Must Read

I LOVED this book. I could not put it down, I finished it in 2 days (if I didn't have to go to work it would have been 1) Great story of the strength of family in the toughest of times. I also enjoyed the way the in which the author wrote the story. The chapters alternate between Daniel's struggles on the road & then what was happening with his family at the same time period until they finally catch up to each other. I really was swept up in the story & was sad when I finished because I wanted more.

    Face the Winter Naked

This book is excellent and I couldn't put it down. A must read. Very timely because of the recession. And we think we have it bad sometimes. The author makes this book about the depression come alive and you feel the characters emotions and pain. Touched my heart greatly. I have recommended this book to all my friends.

    A must read!!

This is a must read book for teens and up to 99! Very touching novel about the Great Depression and one families struggle. If you weren't born yet, you will learn much about those times and wonder how people survived, and somehow they did just that.. Those who remember will be touched by this story as well. There is love, despair and even humor. This book was hard to put down as I couldn't wait to see where Danial would be next and if he would ever come home. I highly recommend this book.

    Decent read

This is a good historical novel. The ending was too abrupt, and wished the author would had drawn it out a little more. When I came to the last page, I thought there was 100 more, but they were the first pages of another novel.

    Excellent read!

The author does a great job giving Daniel and LaDaisy their voice as they each experience their own hardship during the depression. It is a long book but it is so interesting that I had a hard time putting it down. I was finished before I knew it. The story is set in a time not many authors write about today. I even learned a couple of things about our history. If you are looking for a really good, well written story, this book is for you.

Should be on new york times best sellers list

This book shoild be on new york times best seller list along side "unbroken", " the help", and "water for elephants". If you love historical fiction you will appreciate this story of a war vetran during the depression. I was surprised to read that this is the first adult book the author published given the author herself grew up during the depression. I hope to read more from this gifted writer before she retires. This book is a must read! I hope she recieves an award for her work or at least recgnition for her art of story telling. Thank you for a great read.

    Great story!

My mother often talked of the difficulties of growing up during the Depression. Reading this book I realized that it was even worse than she let on. This was a very moving book that was heart breaking to read at times. Well worth reading!

    Amazing, simply amazing

I am not even done with this book yet but felt compelled to write a review. Wonderful book. I can not put it down. For a first time novel, this book is outstanding. I hope to read more by Bonnie Turner. This would make an excellent book club book for all of the discussion topics. I think it would also be a fantastic novel for history students to get a real feel for what it was like during the Great Depression.

    Couldn't put it down!

This was a powerful, deep story about the heartache, tragedy, and redemption of a family during the Great Depression. The characters were soulful and believable. I cannot give this book enough praise to suit it. The author normally writes children's books pertaining to Native American legends, so this is a branch out from her norm. She did an excellent job with the flow, and it was a beautiful story.

I started reading this book on a Friday night and finished it by mid day on Saturday. The only thing about the book that disappointed me was that it had to end.
