Facilitated Stretching, Fourth Edition, examines techniques and guidelines for PNF stretches in a variety of settings. Stretches are demonstrated on a treatment table, mat on the floor, chair, cable-pulley machine, and weightlifting bench. Stretches are grouped according to each joint, and the majority of the stretches include both a partner stretch version and a self-stretch version. The accompanying online video then demonstrates more than 90 of these stretches to reinforce proper technique for each stretch as well as four sample stretching routines. Visual icons in the book indicate which stretches are shown in the video.

As in previous editions, specific routines are included for cycling, golf, running, swimming, throwing and racket sports, and now ice hockey. McAtee and Charland do it again - taking a great resource dedicated to effective stretching and improving on it in this 4th edition. I have been a big fan of Bob's work over the years and this 4th Edition of Facilitated Stretching is an excellent improvement over an already functional and user-friendly book on stretching. The updated visually appealing photos and the inclusion of dozens of extremely effective videos helps to make this book very dynamic for those looking for guidance and ideas on stretching techniques. I refer to this as "more than just a cook book" - the first part of the book does a fine job of explaining the mechanisms behind stretching, comparing techniques and detailing the workings of different stretch mechanisms. I applaud the authors for not bogging down the fluid flow of the reading with too much focus on the research. Readers interested in the evidence behind stretching are encouraged to scour the abundance of research that supports PNF stretching. The "cook book" component of the book is meant as a compliment...the authors, assisted with the color photos and descriptive photos, provide clear guidance on stretching techniques. And I was thrilled to see the addition of practical stretching outside of the clinical realm - useful for all athletes and active individuals. I keep this book on my desk for quick reference - and I definitely recommend it to anyone interested in improving flexibility and movement - regardless of your training background...this book speaks to everyone. Obviously it is perfectly suited for movement therapists - but also for any individual seeking clear guidance on the process of facilitated stretching.
