Children's Literature - Uma Krishnaswami
Fenton Rumplemayer is an unfortunate name, but the child is brilliant and has so much insight into people's motives and feelings that we can forgive his parents. Fenton and his friend Maggie manage to find a missing piece from his father's dig, foil the class bully, and work on their own science project, all while discovering how two unrelated species managed to die on top of each other, and how a tooth turned into a horn! Fast reading, and a good story, not only for dino-nuts. The mystery is very realistic, and so is the class bully. We understand why he acts as he does and only hope that, faced with the same problems that he gives Fenton, we'd be able to resist hauling off and slamming him. Sometimes Fenton is just too understanding. But the book is a good read. Other titles in the Dinosaur Detective series include The Raptor's Claw, Night of the Carnotaurus, The Competition, On the Right Track, Out of Place, and Scrambled Eggs.1994, Scientific American, Ages 8 to 12, $12.95 and $3.95.
