Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Born in Venice in 1254 to a family of traders, Marco Polo first journeyed with his father and uncle to Asia when he was 17 years old. The journey through what is today Turkey, Iraq, Iran and China took almost four years. Once there Marco Polo served Kublai Khan, the grandson of Genghis Khan who had conquered much of Asia, for 17 years, exploring Asia and bringing back information to Kublia Khan about his empire. Finally, the Polos returned to Venice. All told, the men had been gone from Venice for more than 24 years and no one knew them at first. Later, during a war between the city of Venice and the City of Genoa, Marco Polo was captured and jailed. During his time in prison, he told another prisoner about his travels. The other prisoner wrote down Marco Polo's adventures, called Description of the World. Today The Travels of Marco Polo is available in print and provides a lasting legacy of exploration. An informative map depicts the travels of Marco Polo from 1271 to 1295. A time line, Fast Facts, glossary, index, and information on how to connect to screened websites through FactHound, are provided. Other books in the Fact Finders "Great Explorers" biography series include Vasco da Gama and Christopher Columbus. 2004, Capstone Press, Ages 7 to 10.
