Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Children's Literature
Russell Ash, author of The Top Ten of Everything and other compilations of facts, is out with another, outstanding collection. This one features comparisons. Weights, sizes, speeds, quantities, and elapsed times from both the natural and the man-made world are compared to one another and to such standards as a bathtub full of water, a line of people holding hands, or a tennis court. Every effort has been made to personalize the comparisons and thereby make them meaningful to the readers. It's a noble effort. The problem is that there's more information presented and more comparisons made than can comfortably fit on even the oversize pages of this book. So, the pages are very crowded, the graphics are very close together, and the print is very, very small. Motivated readers will get out their reading glasses and magnifying glasses though. They know that while learning bits and pieces of information is great for the trivia-minded, real learning lies in the connections between the info-bites. And as this book and its dedication to real-life comparisons prove, real learning is real interesting. 1999 (orig. 1997), Dorling Kindersley Limited, Ages 9 up, $9.95. Reviewer: Judy Katsh
