Editorial Reviews

VOYA
One of four books in Facts on File's new Science Library this handbook on biology is a fine supplemental reference for student research. Each book in the series, which also covers chemistry, physics, and Earth science, is identical in format with a glossary, biographies, a chronology, and charts and tables. The lengthy glossary provides brief, precise definitions of biological terms from abdomen to zymogen. Unfortunately, some of these definitions are so complex it is necessary to look up words used within them. The biographies are equally brief, perhaps too much so for more than a quick introduction to a scientist's importance. No resource of this length can include every scientist, but it is surprising that Greek physician Galen is mentioned in several entries but fails to receive an entry of his own. Scientists are well placed in their historical context, covering modern as well as ancient and medieval times. The chronology is simple but always useful. The charts and tables section is small but practical. Larger charts would have been helpful, as drawings are occasionally small enough to be confusing. The book is illustrated with clear black-and-white line drawings throughout that directly relate to the text. Despite the lack of color, wide margins and ample white space help make this book easy to read or browse. Perhaps most useful in a science classroom for convenient reference, the books in this series will aid any senior high student with some grasp of science. The entire series succeeds in providing a clear overview of each field. Although there are other more descriptive books or series on these sciences, few cover such a wide range of facts so concisely. These handbooks arerecommended for high school or public libraries needing general science reference resources. 2000, Facts on File, 233p, Glossary, Illus., Charts, Chronology, PLB. Ages 12 to 18. This biology handbook is one in a set of four, the other three on physics, chemistry, and earth science. As with all the volumes, this one is divided into four sections: a nicely illustrated glossary of terms, 50-100 word biographies of personalities from Anaximander to G<:u>nter Blobel, chronologies of events (1,600 BCE-2000), and essential charts and tables. Of great use to high schoolers and undergraduates but of limited use beyond. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
