Overview

Elizabeth Baxter is a quiet brunette living in the sleepy village of Windmere Cove, Rhode Island. The drapes in her windows are always drawn, and she keeps to herself. She doesn't socialize, has no friends, and when she's outside, she constantly looks over her shoulder. No one in Windmere Cove knows her; no one pays attention to her. Elizabeth Baxter is an enigma. A mystery. That's because she's living in fear. And keeping her past a secret.

It begins with the arrival of a pink envelope. Elizabeth's name and address are typed neatly on the outside; the post mark reads Windmere Cove, and there's no return address. Elizabeth's world crashes when she opens the card and reads the message inside; I know who you are.

Five years ago, she was Mallory Eden, Hollywood's hottest actress. Blonde and beautiful, her life was a dream come true...until a mysterious stalker turned it into a nightmare. Finally, unable to take the relentless pressure any longer, Mallory Eden was left with no other choice but to make the world think she was dead and begin a new life.

As the days progress, the tension escalates as an old pattern repeats itself. When the phone rings, no one's on the other end. Her house is broken into and ransacked. And then there's the sense that she's being watched. Frightened, Elizabeth finds solace in the arms of Harper Smith, the only person she has befriended in town. As their relationship deepens, Elizabeth wants to tell Harper the truth--until she learns of his unspoken past--a past that connects to Mallory Eden's...

With no one to trust and nowhere to escape, Elizabeth might have to reveal who she really is in order to survive--before a twisted psychopath finally finishes what was started five years ago...

Editorial Reviews

Kirkus Reviews
Feverishly frothy tale of an actress living incognito, menaced by a shadowy stalker. It's been five years since Mallory Eden, that "perky, pretty, girl-next-door" starlet everybody loved, supposedly jumped off a Montana cliff into the turbulent Rock River. Her body was never found, but a suicide note in her Lexus implies that she was unhinged by an unidentified stalker who not only sent her threatening letters, but killed her secretary and then shot Eden in the womb so she could never conceive. While the Hollywood infotainment world mourns, a somewhat fleshier Eden is silently fighting baby cravings and nightmares in the unremarkable Rhode Island hamlet of Windemere Cove. Pretending to be freelance writer Elizabeth Baxter (who never seems to read or write), Eden, whose pre-Hollywood name was Cindy O'Neal, gets an ominous, anonymous letter in the mail one day from someone who purports to know who she is. Baxter-Eden-O'Neal thinks she faked her suicide perfectly, but her past, revealed through distractingly shrill flashbacks, has enough unresolved conflicts (her sleazy boyfriend has become a coveted guest on daytime talk shows), family trauma (she was abandoned as a child by her drug-addicted mother), and trashy secrets (she made her debut in a porno flick) to fill a Jacqueline Susann novel. While our heroine tries to guess who the stalker is (the kindly but strangely familiar locksmith, or her nosey policeman neighbor?), a host of skeletons, including her long-lost mother, stumble out of the closet to claim her for vile and shameless purposes. Shiny with Tinseltown sleaze, this first solo hardcover from Staub plays its tabloid terrors and tacky soap opera clich‚s deathlessly straight. The result is funny when it shouldn't be, silly and affected the rest of the time. A hissy catfight during the cliff-hanging finale is a hoot, but not worth the campy climb to get there.

    Not her best

I loved Dearly Beloved b/c she went into details with the killer without being to graphic. This book reminded me of something I read as a young teen. Also I have noticed a pattern with her,she repeats herself over & over again where you feel like I already know this. I sometimes think the writer get writer blocks. You would understand if you read Slightly Engaged. Other than that I am now reading her 3rd novel she wrote under this name titled All the Way Home so far so good.I will keep reading everything she right even though she occasional slacks her writing skills

    Good story

I've always enjoyed Ms. Staub's books. This book had so many incorrect words/spellings, that I was distracted at times. BUT overall she is great, and I look forward to her books.

    Spirit

Really wish someone would spell ck these ebooks, such a distraction. This should have been a short story because without the repetition it would have been only half the book. Was so disappointed. Was boring when it could have been good. Don't usually give up on a book but had to skim and skip much of the last part of this one. Was so glad it was over.

    Pretty Good!

No one can tell a story like this author! However, I really did not care for the characters. I have read many of this author's books, this is not one of my favorites.

Yes. Which is why I enjoy this. But doing that would show you as a coward. Who takes only the easy way out. Nattie, I know. Scarlet, I don't fight. But alas, my time here is up. So long. *he jumps off of the platform, dissapearing into the clouds. An eagle's cry is heard*

Could have been 80 or 90 pages shorter!

I found this book boring. There was so much detail on stupid things. Two paragraphs on how a woman changes her baby's diaper. Three on exactly what someone puts on their sandwich. And Elizabeth/Mallory/Cindi was constantly questioning herself: Should I do this or should I do that? I understand that she would be paranoid after what she's been through but she kept going over the same things, again, and again, and again. Not to mention the fact that she seemed to suspect everyone of being the stalker, except the real stalker! I really believe that if this book had been cut back to 230 or 240 pages it would have been a big improvement!!
