Although this book begins with the football rivalry between two Doylestown, PA, high schools, it's not really about football. It's more a story of the American small towns from which so many extraordinary young men and women of the U.S. armed forces come. Bryan Buckley was the captain of Central Bucks West and Corey Umbrell was one of the leaders of Central Bucks East when their teams clashed in their senior year of 1998. Eight years later, both were officers leading men in combat in Iraq, Buckley as a marine and Umbrell as an army ranger. Both were proudly fighting for ideals in which they believed, and only one would come home alive. Sielski (sports columnist, Calkins Media) chronicles the lives of these two athletes and illustrates how their personalities and values were formed from interactions with family, friends, coaches, and community.     Excellent

    I've really enjoyed reading this book. It doesn't get political on the war it just shows how two people from relatively similar backgrounds developed from boyhood to manhood. They both make the transition from HS football players (one on great team and one on a average team) to military leaders. It moves from the Friday Night Lights and all the fun associated with that from a player and family perspective to the seriousness of being soldier and having sons deployed halfway around the world in armed conflict and all that that entails.

    I found it very interesting as I followed basically the same pattern as these two men as I'm sure many other military members have. I left the sports fields, headed off to college and then into the military. I also thought a lot of this book was about making choices and where each may lead you. It also showed the humanity of the war and how each member has a story.

    To me it was a excellent and easy read.
    I look forward to more from this writer I liked the style.

    Excellent book - not just for football fans

    I recommend this book to anyone, not just football fans. The story of two families and two boys who become men. They also become true american heroes and not as a result of anything they accomplish on the gridiron! This is a moving, exceptional account of their stories.
