"The nicest thing that has happened to faeries since Peter Pan."-Chicago Tribune "Fascinating tales . . . extraordinary illustrations . . . A charming thing."-The New York Times

It has been 25 years since Brian Froud and Alan Lee created the delightful, imaginative, and surprising Faeries -a book that quickly became a massive international bestseller and went on to sell more than a million copies. Readers continue to offer praise: "This is the most influential book I have ever read." "This book is-where are the words to describe it? Magnificent / Fabulous / Beautiful / Moving / Terrifying / Fantastic. . . ."

In celebration of Faeries¹ 25th anniversary, Abrams is delighted to publish a special edition featuring eight new pages and 20 new pieces of art by Froud and Lee. The artists have also contributed new introductions. Since Faeries first appeared, both men have become tremendously successful and respected figures in the worlds of film, art, and publishing. But Faeries remains perhaps their most enduring work, a superb exploration of the myths, legends, folklore, and fantasy of the world of the faeries.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Twenty-five years ago, self-proclaimed "faery authorities" Froud and Lee published the first edition of their imaginative faery field guide. Since then, the two have gone on to publish numerous faery books and contribute their ideas to such fantasy films as The Dark Crystal, Labyrinth, Legend and the new Lord of the Rings. This expanded version, like its predecessor, features pencil drawings and watercolors of mythical creatures, as well as brief descriptions of their origins and powers; it draws on a long history of phantasmagoric iconography in the generally occidental vein. It boasts new art and introductions by the artists, as well; in its silver anniversary, the bewitching quality of its content remains. Besides faeries, the authors also include renderings of many other denizens of faery land-goblins, dwarves and leprechauns, for instance-as well as stranger breeds, such as the Fachan, a one-armed, one-legged oddity from the Scotland highlands and the Jack-in-Irons, a "Yorkshire giant who haunts lonely roads." For the child learning the pleasures of magical worlds, or for adults who never forgot, this book remains a delight. 176 color and 38 b&w illustrations. (Oct.) Finally...

Here is a book about faeries that does not sugar-coat their mischievous nature or coddle little children's naive beliefs that the fey are sweet winged versions of themselves. With brilliant illustrations portraying the malice as well as the beauty, this book is a must read for any young child, or adult with an appetite for different realms and a desire to indulge. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has ever loved the fey- in any form and invite them to experience these creatures in all varieties.

    Absolutely Delightful!

When I first got this book, I couldn't put it down. I'm only thirteen, but I'd recommend this book to all ages! Captivating illistrations, rivating stories, and dazzling, humorous, advice and characters

    I Also Recommend:

A must-have for the faerie enthusiast!

Brian Froud and Alan Lee's Faeries was perhaps the first book I ever read about faerie folk, and I've still yet to find anything that surpasses it. The illustrations are beautiful, and their arrangement---as though they're part of a faerie scrapbook or field guide---only adds to the richness of the reading experience. The book covers just about every aspect of Faerie that you could ever want to know, including the Seelie and Unseelie Courts, the King and Queen of Faerie, faerie trees and flora, protection against faerie magic, common faerie folk such as pixies, leprechauns, and merfolk, faerie abodes and realms, and lesser-known faeries like the Fachan, Kelpie, and Redcap.

Most of it is too sloppy to read!

I got this book because it looked very similar to the book Gnomes by Wil Huygen. This book is no where near the quality. To make it look more like a field guide much of the book is literally hand written with light gray ink. The writing is too light and illegible. I was disappointed with the quality of pictures as well. Overall I'd say this book was "ok" at best.

Need to learn more about Faeries?

Wow this book is amazing. There were so many faeries to read about and the pictures were absolutely beautiful. It contained a great variety of faeries too -- from the classic pixies to the beautiful Undine. It's a really good book for inspiration and I have used some of the faeries I read about in there in some of my writing and have even tried drawing some of them. If you want to learn more about faeries or simply like to see good art, then I'd definitely recommend this book! It's one of my favorites and I'm still going back and re-visiting it time and time again!

I cannot believe this is my first copy!

I was never exposed to this book as a child, but my kids will certainly be. The World of Faerie will be a part of their lives.

    This book was the inspiration

I found this book because of a friend, and i am very glad indeed. I am an artist, my main subjects are those of the imagination and to some, reality. I learned many things from the information stored within, and the art is done beautifullY!

    Enchanting

Wonderful illustrations of faeries, water witches and other mystical creatures. Includes actual faerie tales about each faerie and nymph, a must have for anyone interested in the mythical world or who appreciates good storytelling and beautiful artwork. Amazing artistry, and design. Five stars is not enough for this masterpiece of legends. Also includes many great prints for tattoo design and general art work
