Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
The Rainbow Fairies want to do something special for the Queen's birthday. They decide that they will not use magic but bake a cake from scratch. They even go to the extent of getting eggs from the chickens, milk from the cow to churn butter, but the story never mentions where the flour comes from or when it is added to the other ingredients. The batter is made, the cake is baked, but when it is done, the fairies realize that there is no icing. They finally decide to use their magic to create a colorful swirl of icing colors. With all their magic, the fairies still find it necessary to put the cake on a wagon and bring it to the palace. The Queen is pleased and reminded of the days when she made cakes from scratch. The message may be one of showing young readers the source of some of the ingredients and how much work it is to make something from scratch rather than using magic or in today's case opening a mix or going to the bakery. A level 2 book in the "Scholastic Reader" series. For those who are meeting the fairies for the first time, the CIP page pictures and names them. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
