Children's Literature - Beverley Fahey
The intent of the "Happily Ever After" series is to introduce young readers to the elements of fairy tales. Beginning with a definition of fairy godmothers as those who "use their magic to keep people safe," Riggs explains they are most often helpers. She then separates them into bad fairies who cast curses (Maleficent in Sleeping Beauty) and those who use their power for good (Cinderella). Fairy godmothers can aide a prince, a princess, or even a wooden puppet (as in Pinocchio). Good fairies cannot undo a curse of an evil fairy, but they can mitigate the spell as the seventh fairy does in Sleeping Beauty. There is very little here which children will not have already gleaned either from reading fairy tales or watching animated films. The text is easy to read and the design of each page is attractive, but much of the information is repetitive and redundant. The illustrations rely heavily on stills from Disney movies with the remainder coming from Dover Publications and other picture libraries. A fill-in-the blanks story addendum is trite and will do little to encourage creativity. The final illustration has a 1920s-era look that will leave readers (and this reviewer) wondering what fairy tale is depicted. Cinderella is the likely story, but a caption would have been helpful. A glossary of a scant three words and a "Read More" section listing two titles round out the book. The hefty price tag combined with the dearth of information make for a very weak endeavor.
