Overview

Excerpt from Fairy Tales From the Far North

Slowly but surely the name of Asbjörnsen has been gaining ground in popularity as one of the, most fascinating and delightful writers of Fairy Tales, not only among the young folks in this country, but also among adult readers and students of Folk Lore. Asbjörnsen was first introduced to the English public through the late Sir George Dasent's translations, published in 1858 and 1874. In 1881 appeared my translation of a selection of his Norske Folke-Eventyr (Norwegian Folk and Fairy Tales), and his Huldre-Eventyr (Tales and Legends about the wood-fairy and other super natural beings), with the original illustrations which a number of Norwegian artists, all friends and admirers of the genial author, had for some time been preparing for the first illustrated edition of his Tales. The English edition was published under the title of "Round the Yule Log," and met with a most favorable reception both in this country and in America.
