Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Lisette Baez
Meet Faith Higgins, the walking, talking contradiction of what most people believe about cheerleaders. Faith is the newest member of the Greenview Junior High cheer team. She is super shy and absolutely loathes being the center of attention, unlike the rest of her outgoing, bubbly cheer mates. Faith quickly learns that the cheer squad snob has it in for her when she tries to embarrass her at cheer camp. This is the true test for Faith. Can she overcome her insecurities and lead the team in chants? Or will she let her shyness overcome her and find herself sitting on the sidelines? The author captures the true spirit of cheer in this exciting new series for young readers. The book's format is exciting and attractive as well. The glossary is a great way to enhance reading comprehension and the author provides further insight for the reader with a "Which cheerleader are you?" quiz, the "Team Cheer Forum" and much more. The closing activities provide a fun yet educational way to enhance critical thinking in young readers as well. The "Meet the Author" section at the back is unique because it feels as if the reader has just had an intimate conversation with the author. Reviewer: Lisette Baez

Faith is happy to have quickly found a new friend as she gets ready to attend a new middle school. Gaby convinces Faith to try out for the cheer squad and despite being very shy and a bit awkward, Faith makes the team. Cheer camp strengthens her skills but her confidence is shaken by Ella, the camp snob. Will Faith come out on top?

The format of this book (lots of white space, length--96 pages, and text boxes of lists or forms in every chapter) will appeal to the intended audience of preteen and teen girls. A short glossary is augmented throughout the book by words in bold that are defined or described in a footnote at the bottom of the page. Many of the words defined are cheerleading moves. The author states that she was a cheerleader both in her youth and later for several years with a semi-pro football team, so she knows the sport of cheering.
