These illuminating 'faith lessons' afford a new understanding of the Bible that will ground your convictions and transform your life. -- Church Volume Four Contents -- Part of a series previously published as That the World May Know, Faith Lessons on the Death and Resurrection of the Messiah focuses on the last week of Jesus' life, his death and resurrection, and the Holy Spirit's visit on Pentecost. 1. When Storms Come (Sea of Galilee) Just as Jesus stilled the storm, demonstrating his power over the natural world, so he also takes charge of our raging struggles. 2. Piercing the Darkness (Kursi) Kursi was believed to be the home of demons. There, in a deliberate choice to aggressively confront evil, Jesus healed the demon-possessed man. 3. Gates of Hell (Caesarea Philippi) In the center of this pagan city, Jesus declared, 'Upon this rock I will build my church,' challenging believers to boldly wage war on evil. 4. City of the Great King (I) (Jerusalem) 5. City of the Great King (II) (Jerusalem) When seen in the urban setting of Herod's first century Jerusalem, Jesus' actions and teachings come alive, sparking a deeper understanding of our faith's Jewish roots. Video Two 6. The Lamb of God (Mount of Olives) The significance of Passover celebrations and Passover Week events intertwine with Jesus' choice of time, place, and message. 7. The Weight of the World (Capernum/ Gethsemane) Manufacturing olive oil involves intense pressure. This process exposes a fresh perspective from which we can fully appreciate Jesus' sacrifice, which is our anointing. 8. Roll Away the Stone (Garden Tomb) Understanding the significance of Jesus' burial in a Jewish-style tomb and his resurrection during the Feast of First Fruits reveals the magnitude of his love and the new life he brings. 9. Power to the People (Southern Stairs) The day of Pentecost marks the day when God's presence left the temple structure to dwell in his followers -- empowering us today, as then, to change the world. 10. Total Commitment (Caesarea) David built fame out of simplicity; Herod's palace fortresses were elaborate. But as with David, who lived for God, what matters most is not what we build, but for whom we build. The completely new Faith Lessons resource takes your small group on a round trip to ancient times, places, and customs, and back again. This lively, interactive journey is more than fascinating -- it's faith-inspiring and life-changing. If you're a group leader, your job is simplified with the all new Leader's Guide: fresh, clear, and easy to follow, designed to minimize your preparation time and maximize your effectiveness. If you're a participant, you'll appreciate how the brand-new Participant's Guide carefully and plainly helps you turn the lessons you learn from the past into real-life applications that impact the way you live your faith.

Chapter One

SESSION ONE

when storms come

Before You Lead

Synopsis

Water has always been an important source of life to people in the Middle East. In biblical times, cities rose up near fresh water sources such as lakes and springs. The people built cisterns, aqueducts, and tunnels to preserve and utilize this precious resource. Bible stories often mention events, discussions, and disputes concerning water.

But in the minds of the Jewish people-the descendants of desert nomads-this highly valued commodity also had a darker side. Large bodies of water, particularly the sea, often represented death and chaos-some of the worst things in life. Believing that stormy seas were caused by evil forces, the people viewed such storms with fear. Only God, they thought, could calm the chaos of stormy water because only He could control evil.

The Sea of Galilee was beautiful, and it provided a means of transportation and source of food. But sometimes cool winds blow off the hills of what people today call the Golan Heights. This cool air sinks rapidly onto the sea, displacing thewarmer air and causing sudden storms. So the darker side of the Sea of Galilee was never far from the minds of the Jews who lived nearby.

It is interesting that Jesus deliberately chose the region on the north shore of the Sea of Galilee-the largest body of fresh water in Israel-as the base for His teaching ministry. Jesus called Himself the "living water." He performed miracles on and near the water. And from the shores of the Sea of Galilee, He called fishermen to be His first disciples.

This video focuses on an event that happened to Jesus' disciples on the Sea of Galilee. You'll guide participants in taking a fresh look at the disciples as they endured a terrifying nighttime storm. During this night, Jesus allowed His disciples to strain alone at the oars for many hours, then He nearly walked right by them until they called out to Him for help. While they were stuck in the middle of the Sea of Galilee, rowing against towering waves, they learned more about faith. In this story there is much for us to learn as well.

Key Points of This Lesson

1. God's power is greater than any evil-any of the storms of life-we face. Jesus clearly demonstrated His power over evil to His disciples when He commanded the forces of nature and calmed the stormy Sea of Galilee, which represented the power of evil in the minds of His disciples.

2. Even though God is always watching over us, He sometimes allows us to struggle-just as He allowed the disciples to struggle against the storm-swept waves before He came to their rescue. God uses the storms in our lives to accomplish His work.

3. God wants us to follow Him courageously and call out to Him for help as we seek to carry out His purposes.

SESSION ONE

when storms come

Introduction

5 minutes

Welcome

Assemble the participants together. Welcome them to session one of Faith Lessons on the Death and Resurrection of the Messiah.

What's to Come

Sometimes the life of faith is tough, isn't it? At times we face frightening obstacles as we seek to do that which we believe God would have us do. And sometimes in the midst of the battle, it seems as if God has left us to struggle on our own. But God is never far away when we confront the storms of life. In today's session we will:

Learn about Jesus' ministry in the regions surrounding the Sea of Galilee and discover insights that will help us face the storms of life.

See that God is more powerful than any evil, than any storms we face.

Realize that He sometimes allows us to struggle during a storm but is always ready to answer when we call out to Him.

Be drawn to step out in faith and live more courageously for Him.

Let's start by thinking about some tough things people face in life.

Questions to Think About

Participant's Guide page 11.

Turn to page 11 of your Participant's Guide. Let's consider several questions that will prepare us for the video we'll see in a few moments.

Ask each question and solicit a few responses from group members. You may want to record responses to questions one and three on a marker board, chalkboard, or overhead projector so they are visible to the group.

1. Each of us faces difficulties-what we could label "storms"-in life. Which "storms" do people today face? Just give one- or two-word answers.

Suggested Responses: financial setbacks, divorce, loss of loved ones, sickness, crime, lawsuits, auto accidents, serious injuries, loss of work, children who go astray, natural disasters, fire, etc.

2. What difficulties or "storms" frighten you most deeply? To what underlying spiritual force do you attribute those storms?

Suggested Responses: Allow participants who are willing to share their fears and their understanding of what causes those storms.

3. In what ways do evil forces impact your life? Where do you see Satan's power influencing your life?

Suggested Responses: See if participants attribute some of their difficulties to the forces of evil. List the difficulties that they believe have spiritual significance or a spiritual source. Try to prepare them to personalize the mindset of the disciples, who viewed the storm they faced on the Sea of Galilee as more than just bad weather.

Let's continue to keep these ideas in mind as we watch the video.
