Chapter One

SESSION ONE

Everything to Lose, Nothing to Gain

Introduction

4 minutes

Welcome

Assemble the participants together. Welcome them to session one of Faith Lessons on the Early Church.

What's to Come

In this session, we'll learn about how Jesus, the rabbi, prepared His chosen disciples for their future ministry in the unbelievably pagan cities of Asia Minor, which today we know as Turkey. We'll visit the ruins of the synagogue of Korazin in Galilee, the region in which Jesus did most of His teaching. Next, we'll visit Caesarea Philippi, a city famous for its pagan worship. Here, Jesus taught His disciples-and some startled pagan worshipers-key lessons concerning His identity as the living Messiah and the church's power to triumph over evil. Finally, we will visit the Mount of Olives, where Jesus concluded His disciples' teaching by ascending into heaven while they watched. We will see how these events empowered Jesus' disciples to go out and change their world.

Questions to Think About

Participant's Guide page 13.

Ask each question and solicit a few responses from group members. Youmay want to write these responses on a marker board, chalkboard, or overhead projector so that participants may view them as the session progresses.

1. Take a minute to list what you find to be the most difficult places or situations in which to minister in the world around you. Suggested Responses: These will vary. Encourage participants to think of a variety of specific places and situations.

2. What factors make it difficult to share your faith in these places or situations?

Suggested Responses: These will vary, and they will overlap. Your list may be similar to the obstacles Jesus' disciples faced when they went into Asia Minor.

Let's keep these ideas in mind as we view the video.
