Everything looks perfect in Sugar Land, Texas. But it’s not.
No one knows that better than Walker “Bear” Wells, a former college football player now serving as a minister in this upscale Texas town, where famous athletes mix with ranchers and the local parish priest wants to arm wrestle. It’s a beautiful master-planned community, but people can’t be held to neighborhood restrictions, and Bear deals daily with emotional and spiritual problems, in both his flock and his own family.
But never murder. Not until a man is found dead on the nearby golf course, his skull crushed.
Bear has no interest in playing detective. His job is praying for the dead, not searching for their killers. But every time he turns around, another facet of the investigation tangles with his own life…like the fact that the murdered man’s son—and a main suspect—is currently dating his own rebellious teenage daughter.
He made a promise to do the right thing. But keeping promises may be what led to murder...
“Praise be! A new series with a soul, a heart, and a down-home Texas twang. Preacher Bear Wells is an entirely original sleuth and author Stephanie Jaye Evans is that real rarity: a debut writer with dead-on dialogue, winning characters, and—mirabile dictu! —nimble plotting.” — Susan Wittig Albert, national bestselling author of the China Bayles mysteries
“Warmhearted and clever.” — M.C. Beaton, author of the Agatha Raisin Mysteries
“Stephanie Jaye Evans' marvelous debut sets the traditional village cozy smack-dab in the middle of today's suburban planned community. Evans' gift for colorful characters enlivens Faithful Unto Death, while her assured writing propels it forward. I love her reluctant clerical sleuth, the Reverend Walker ‘Bear’ Wells. Bring on the next Sugar Land mystery!” — Julia Spencer-Fleming, New York Times bestselling author of One Was a Soldier

Stephanie is a very talented writer with a true sense of humor. When new subjects or characters were added it was done smoothly and cleverly. The only reason I won't recommend this to others is because of the profanity that could so easily been left out, especially when the story is in the first person who is a Preacher. We all know that much of society has become illiterate enough they feel they have to express themselves in vulgar words but it should not be encouraged through literature. The mystery and intrigue In this book hold one's interest to the end in a delightfully humorous style. I would love to add this to my library but won't because of the profanity. Stephanie, many of us would be excited to be a fan if you would dispense with the profanity. You do a have a wonderful, and unique talent loaded with humor. I was privileged to win this book but won't be keeping it.
Our book club really enjoyed this book. The characters were so similar to the people is am with every day. When someone dies you head straight over to the house with a pound cake.
Sugar Land, Texas is a beautiful master-planned community where famous athletes rub shoulders with ranchers. It is home to Walker "Bear" Wells, minister and a former college football player. Bear has dealt with a lot over the years with his congregation and his own family but when a man is found murdered on a local golf course he finds himself somewhere her never dreamed he would be, right in the middle of all the drama. Every time he turns around, another facet of the investigation tangles with his own life. Case in point, Bear's rebellious daughter is currently dating the murdered man's son. It make take more than a prayer to catch this killer. A intriguing debut with a very pleasing preacher protagonist. Walker "Bear" Wells is not your typical preacher. He has trouble coming up with a prayer on the spur of the moment and has very unique sense of humor. People do feel safe telling him everything and anything. But will he keep his promises and keep things confidential? Sugar Land has a wonderful set of quirky characters that add so much to the story. Annie Laurie is the perfect preacher's wife, Jo is the typical "preacher's kid", you know obstinate and ready for trouble. Bear and Detective Wanderley will learn they make a really good team. Add to that a bunch of people trying to cover for each other and cover their own A**, when no one is sure what really happened made this a very enjoyable read. I will anxiously be awaiting the next book in this series. This is another author to keep our eyes on!
