Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

“A fun, flighty caper. Slyly sprinkled with borrowings from superhero tales and packed with kid-pleasing yucks, this copiously and comically illustrated tale is sufficiently full of baloney to fly.” —Publishers Weekly

“Trine's fast-paced, humorous new series will capture the hearts of bright new readers.” —Jody Fickes Shapiro, Adventures for Kids, Ventura, CA, Booksense

“Trine and Montijo have given readers an appealing superhero and his trusty assistant. These delightfully entertaining adventure stories are a must-have for most libraries.” —School Library Journal

Children's Literature
AGERANGE: Ages 7 to 10.

"Melvin Beederman, Superhero" is getting ready to attend a superhero convention and, with classes such as "Train Stopping Made Easy," "Yesterday's Bully," and "Tomorrow's Bad Guy," he cannot wait. His superhero-in-training assistant Candace is happily watching over Los Angeles. Melvin thinks his worst problem is the inability to turn off his X-ray vision. He cannot stand seeing everyone in their underwear! Too bad something more distressing is happening. The Spaz Brothers happen to be at the bad guy convention across the street and when they notice Melvin is out of town, they plot to take over the city. This comic-like book keeps readers engaged partly by Melvin addressing the reader. The illustrations complement the text and share the same pages, which helps to hold the reader's attention. There is much comedy in Melvin's superhero powers as well as a prominent positive message. Although it always takes him four or five tries to fly, it does not trouble him. Melvin is the most amazing superhero because he is not afraid to try and keep on trying. Reviewer: Julie Minnich

School Library Journal

Gr 2-5 In his fifth adventure, Melvin decides to go to Las Vegas for a superhero convention, hoping to see his old friends from the Superhero Academy. He leaves his assistant, Candace, in charge of Los Angles. Humor abounds in scenes such as the one in which Melvin visits the library, with funny illustrations showing readers how he sees everyone's underwear with his X-ray vision that he can't turn off. It continues as adversaries at the Bad Guys Convention work hard on perfecting their evil laughs. Meanwhile, Johnny Fink and Knucklehead plot to switch magic capes with Candace so they can rob her of her magic powers. And Hugo, Melvin's pet rat, mistakenly eats a pretzel-shaped telephone, resulting in operator messages coming from his stomach. Bizarre, outrageous, and totally kid-friendly, this easy chapter book is sure to appeal to the "Captain Underpants" fans of the world. Zany black-and-white drawings of the incredible events appear throughout the chapters.-Debbie Whitbeck, West Ottawa Public Schools, Holland, MI
