Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
It is time to exercise your fingers and discover the world of sports by flipping through 100 factoid-filled flaps! Seven unique sporting event spreads, including cycling, track and field, bat and ball sports, swimming, snow and ice sports, and more, are included. This book makes up for its lack of narrative by providing the reader with a myriad of facts about each sport. For example, the swimming spread boasts information about water polo, synchronized swimming, diving, and racing. The flaps mention facts such as size of the pools, sporting rules, and techniques. This style of book is great for introducing young readers to nonfiction in a fun way, although the text might be a little tough for younger readers as it features some technical vocabulary associated with each sport. The illustrations do a good job at indicating the movements and actions required by the sports, but ultimately feel a bit generic. The flaps provide an engaging novelty, but the pages feel a touch too thin for a moveable book. Many of the flaps were initially stuck and required force to open, which means possible tearing by children. Despite these concerns about the book’s quality, young sports enthusiasts will find much to enjoy about it. Reviewer: Brandon West; Ages 3 to 7.
