Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Spafford's (Little Suzy's Zoo series) popular, cuddly greeting-card critters star in this sunny if slight story about the arrival of autumn. For best pals Suzy Ducken and Emily Marmot, it just wasn't fall until "they took that first running leap [into piles of leaves]." But the season seems slow to change this year, so the friends devise some plans to give the leaves on the trees a little help. When cheerleading, coaxing and reciting magic spells all fail, the buddies pool their lung power for one last, ultimately successful, attempt. The writing lacks the color and verve of the art and focuses more on the girls' can-do attitude than on the autumnal pleasures the characters seek. But the watercolors, typified by sweet-faced animals in energetic stances, will give Spafford's admirers plenty to coo over. A visual story line about a squirrel onlooker adds extra dimension. Ages 3-8. (Oct.) Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
Children's Literature
Fall Is for Friends by Spafford keeps with the great tradition of other "Suzy's Zoo" books. This is a great book for young readers who enjoy the autumn activity of jumping in piles of leaves. Suzy and Emily can hardly wait for the leaves to fall off the trees. So, instead of waiting, they try various creative activities to encourage the leaves to fall (such as cheering, showing, using magic, and singing the leaves down). However, the unrealistic conclusion may disappoint readers who cannot "sing" leaves off trees themselves. This story not only depicts the activities of fall, but also the creativity of two friends in their attempts to welcome the new season; therefore, this story would be a good choice for not only autumn themes, but friendship, creativity, and playtime themes as well. The watercolor illustrations perfectly match the lighthearted text to the playful activities depicted in the story. Young readers will enjoy this autumn read-aloud. 2003, Scholastic Inc, Ages 5 to 7.

PreS-Gr 1-Charming watercolor illustrations are the main draw of this slight story featuring animal characters originally created for a greeting-card line. Suzy Ducken and Emily Marmot love everything about the fall: brisk weather, apples, pumpkins, and, especially, piles of freshly fallen foliage. This year, however, it doesn't seem as though the leaves will ever drop from the trees. The confident youngsters believe they can hurry the process along and devise several plans to do so, but nothing seems to do the trick. Finally, as the friends sing a song designed to encourage the stubborn leaves, a gentle breeze begins to blow. Oblivious to the wind, they take joy in their perceived accomplishment. Done in shades of brown, orange, and red, the sweet pictures have a cozy quality. Throughout the tale, a playful squirrel watches the girls' antics and celebrates their achievement. An additional purchase where more seasonal books are needed.-Maryann H. Owen, Racine Public Library, WI Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
