Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Two children cavort in the fall leaves and notice the sizes, shapes and colors of the leaves, as well as the sounds they make when you roll in them. Inside the house, they have a snack and make leaf pictures with glue and crayon lines. The book perfectly captures how preschool and early elementary children play with leaves in the fall and invites readers to do the same thing. The simple text also suggests an introduction to leaf taxonomyžedge type, and size. This is followed up with a single page of identified leaves and a last page indicating how leaves grow throughout the year. Bright collage illustrations are made of cut, handpainted paper and will show well in story hours. A delightful and useful book to put alongside this author/illustrator team's other books about pumpkins, apples, and gardening. 2000, Scholastic Press. Ages 3 to 6. Reviewer: Susan Hepler

PreS-Gr 1-Brightly illustrated and infectiously cheery, this overview of two siblings' favorite time of year gets it just right. The focus is on autumn leaves and all the things these imaginative children do with them. Leaves are for watching, catching, stomping, kicking, and collecting, and big piles of freshly raked leaves are perfect for jumping into. After collecting leaves from their favorite trees, the children label some and make silly pictures with others, two very good ideas for classrooms or home. Maple, ginkgo, sassafras, beech, and two types of oak are represented. The last page shows the sequence of the growth of leaves from spring to winter in very simple terms and mentions that some leaves do not change color or fall off in the fall. Exceptionally well-crafted paper-collage illustrations capture the children's easy exuberance while the simply written text is nicely paced for reading aloud. By the same team responsible for It's Pumpkin Time (Scholastic, 1994), this is a seasonal title you won't want to miss.-Alicia Eames, New York City Public Schools Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.|
Kirkus Reviews
A kaleidoscope of colors dazzle the eye in this exuberant celebration of the autumnal season. Hall and Halpern's latest collaboration takes a peek at the fall season through the wide-eyed wonder of a young child. A brother and sister anticipate the arrival of fall, eagerly scanning the trees' leaves for clues. A change in color heralds the onset of brisk days and harvest delights. Hall highlights the hallmarks of the season; vivid colors, windy days, swirling piles of fallen leaves. The siblings marvel over leaves of all shapes and sizes and engage in activities that remain a perennial favorite among children: raking up and leaping into mountainous heaps of leaves. Written in easily comprehensible terms, the text contains a wealth of information, including a detailed two-page spread devoted to identifying common leaves and an informative chart depicting the life cycle of a leaf through the four seasons. Halpern's vibrant collages capture the splendor of Mother Nature's finery. Her full-page illustrations contain a colorful array of leaves drifting across the pages. The large shapes and neat lines of the pictures are ideal for preschoolers. A sparkling introduction to the season, which will inspire readers to get out and enjoy nature's colorful bounty. A best bet for classrooms, too. (Picture book. 2-7)Harter, Debbie THE ANIMAL BOOGIE Illus. by the author Barefoot (32 pp.) Oct. 2000

    Perfect Fall Story!

I recommend this story for preschoolers, K and first graders. This is a great story with wonderful illustrations. Easy to sit and read and ask your child for their prediction of what is next, what is happening in your yard that is happening in this story too, lets make some of the projects that these kids did. You can do a lot with this one book!
