Overview

Fall of Rome is the third "Peacemakers: Old West" novel from award-winning author, Beth Ciotta. Previously published: 2008. Updated reissue: 2015

They gamble their lives with reckless abandon, but are they brave enough to bet on love?

Famous for bending the law to get his man, former Wells Fargo detective Rome Garrett signs on with the Peacemaker Alliance, a covert government agency intent on taming the west. His first assignment, bringing down cold-blooded killer Bulls-eye Brady, will help return his tarnished career to glory. Even better, when he learns he must team up with the only woman who ever broke his heart, Rome considers it a bonus. He vows to show his old flame how it feels to love and lose, vanquishing the hellcat from his dreams once and for all.

Retired cardsharp, Kat Simmons, has been in hiding from Bulls-eye Brady for six years. Now she's being asked to risk her obscurity and join a whirlwind poker tournament to bait Brady into reclaiming the woman who "got away." Trapping Brady, a man she fears, means teaming up with Rome Garrett, the only man she ever loved. She should feel safer having the Peacemaker with her, but the passion that reignites between them is frightening and past betrayals difficult to forget, especially when a secret is revealed that could doom any chance at love.

Oh my goodness, I LOVED this story! I loved the romance...but I won't give up any spoilers here about whose romance. I loved the story line involving a little girl named Frankie. Who is she? The main criminal, Bulls Eye Brady, is a mean guy that you have no problem wanting all sorts of bad things to happen to! There is so much going on in this story that takes you on an emotional roller coaster, but hang on because it is so worth the ride! I love the characters in this series and am excited knowing Beth Ciotta is planning to release a fourth book in the near future. Check out the previous two releases, Lasso the Moon and Romancing the West and then dive heart first into Fall of Rome. You will enjoy your journey back into the Wild West!!

Rome Garrett and Kat Simmons fell in lust under the faro table 6 years ago. Their passion was hot, but through an error of judgment on Kat's part and a rage of jealousy on Rome's part, they went their separate ways. Rome was a Wells Fargo man, working to right the wrongs of the West, and became a dime novel romance hero. Kat needed to make some life changes, quit her gambling and drinking ways, lost the face paint and fancy dresses and settled into the life of a rather mild-mannered salon owner. Both would state that they were over each other, but deep inside, their passion was simmering. This romance is filled with good vs. evil, love running amuck, (the Garrett brothers are dropping like flies), kidnapping, attempted kidnapping, train robberies, shoot-em-ups, and passion. The characters are delightful, the description is superb (the gunman hadn't had a bath this year), and even though I am a contemporary junkie, I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

Rome Garrett was renowned for bringing hardened criminals to justice his fame made him a legend in dime-store novels. However, the Wells Fargo detective fell from grace over six years ago when he killed a man while overextending the law and was with his pants down and gun un-holstered with a married woman. His beloved Kat Simmons left him and simply vanished.-------------- Rome falls apart, but now in 1878 he has started to regain his equilibrium with a position as a detective for the President Hayes sponsored Peacemaker Alliance (PMA). His assignment is to bring down train robber Bulls-eye Brady and to insure Kat's niece Frankie is safe from him. Kat resurfaces to bait Bulls-eye Brady but will need a totally responsible Rome, not the drunken womanizer she remembers, to help her.------------------ The return of PMA agents and their spouses (see ROMANCING THE WEST) enhances an enjoyable second chance at love western romance. The lead couple is a delightful pairing as she left him when he fell from grace in her mind due to his cheating others because he crossed the ethical line when he killed a man in his mind he let down people especially his beloved. With a chance for redemption and love, the rise of Rome seems precarious as he knows defeating Brady and rescuing Frankie is not enough winning back Kat is everything, but failure means the freefall of Rome. Beth Ciotta provides another excellent Reconstruction Era tale (see LASSO THE MOON).---------- Harriet Klausner
