Meet the Author

Wilkie Collins
Wilkie Collins
If you think Victorian literature is quaint, you haven’t read anything by Wilkie Collins. Often considered the father of the English detective novel, Collins has thrilled readers with suspenseful gothic tales such as The Woman in White and The Moonstone.

Biography

Wilkie Collins has long been overshadowed by his friend and collaborator Charles Dickens -- unfortunately for readers who have consequently not discovered one of literature's most compelling writers. His novels are ceremonious and none too brief; they are also irresistible. Take the opening lines of his 1852 story of marital deceit, Basil: "What am I now about to write? The history of little more than the events of one year, out of the twenty-four years of my life. Why do I undertake such an employment as this? Perhaps, because I think that my narrative may do good; because I hope that, one day, it may be put to some warning use." It's a typical Collins opening, one that draws the reader in with a tone that's personal, but carries formality and import.

With his long, frizzy black beard and wide, sloping forehead, Collins looked like a grandfatherly type, even in his 30s. But his thinking and lifestyle were unconventional, even a bit ahead of his time. His characters (particularly the women) have a Henry James–like predilection for bucking social mores, and he occasionally found his work under attack by morality-mongers. Collins was well aware of his books' potential to offend certain Victorian sensibilities, and there is evidence in some of his writings that he was prepared for it, if not welcoming of it. He writes in the preface to Armadale, his 1866 novel about a father's deathbed murder confession, "Estimated by the clap-trap morality of the present day, this may be a very daring book. Judged by the Christian morality which is of all time, it is only a book that is daring enough to speak the truth."

Collins began his career by writing his painter father's biography. He gained popularity when he began publishing stories and serialized novels in Dickens's publications, Household Words and All the Year Round. His best-known works are The Woman in White and The Moonstone, both of which -- along with Basil -- have been made into films.

Collins often alludes to fantastic, supernatural happenings in his stories; the events themselves are usually borne out by reasonable explanations. What remains are the electrifying effects one human being can have upon another, for better and for worse. His main characters are often described in terms such as "remarkable," "extraordinary," and "singular," lending their actions -- and thereby the story -- a special urgency. In one of his great successes, 1860's The Woman in White, Collins spins what is basically a magnificent con story into something almost ghostly: The fates of two look-alike women -- a beautiful, well-off woman and a poor insane-asylum escapee -- are intertwined and manipulated by two evil men. One of those is among the best fictional villains ever created, the kill-‘em-with-kindness Count Fosco. Fosco is emblematic of another Collins hallmark -- antagonists who manage to throw their victims off guard by some powerful charm of personality or appearance.

The Moonstone, published in 1868, is regarded by many to be the first English detective novel. Starring the unassuming Sergeant Cuff, it follows the trail of a sought-after yellow diamond from India that has fallen into the wrong hands. Like The Woman in White, the novel is told in multiple first person narratives that display Collins's gift for distinctive and often humorous voices. Whether it is servants, foreigners, or the wealthy, Collins is an equal-opportunity satirist who quietly but deftly pokes fun at human foibles even as he draws nuanced, memorable characters.

Though The Woman in White and The Moonstone are Collins's standouts, he had a productive, consistent career; the novels Armadale, No Name and Poor Miss Finch are worthwhile reads, and his short stories will particularly appeal to Edgar Allan Poe fans. Fortunately in the case of this underappreciated writer, there are plenty of titles to appreciate.

Good To Know

Collins studied law, and though he never practiced as a lawyer, his knowledge of the subject is evident in his fiction. He also apprenticed with a tea merchant in his pre-publication years.

He was addicted to laudanum, a form of opium that he used to treat his pain from rheumatic gout.

Collins never married, but he had a long-term live-in relationship with one woman, and a second romance that produced three children.

He is named after popular artist Sir David Wilkie; both his parents were painters who counted Samuel Taylor Coleridge and William Wordsworth among their friends.

    Rose
Thank you Lily. :) I know it won't be the same, but I'll be back eventually, hopefully. I've been missing everyone for the past several weeks. It's boring, lonely, angering, and so much more. It really sucks. And thanks for the compliment. Yeah, he can stay away from me right now. He's been using and playing me for too long and right now I'm just fed up with everything. Still have to deal with him in two classes and homeroom every day though >:( I hope I can see you again soon too. You have a great summer too then :) Oh, and I do have a boyfriend now. At least he doesn't hide things from me. Or expect anything from me. Which is nice of him. Whelp, class is about to end so gotta run. Hopefully I'll talk to you soon :) Please post who rps who for me real quick too please. Thanks.

    Rosepetal to Lilywolf! Read now!

Okay, first off, I'm super duper grounded. Yay me. It's not entirely my fault, but that's all my stepmother will believe >.< Okay, if I happen to be gone for over four months (August? bad with months...), then please find a permanent rp'r for Rosepetal and Lavapaw. In the meantime, can you please find temporary rp's for those two? I do not believe it's fair for them to "not" be around for several months and months. Laramie (stepmother) has taken my nooks, iPod, CD player, everything, from me for at least a few months. I "stole" (more like did my sister's homework) my older sister's biology homework and so now everything around me went downhill ever since. Can't believe it's only been a week and a half. If Comet is back, do tell him I hope to speak to him again soon and tell him to tell his sister that I can't use my email for some time either. Sorry and thank you.

Crystal padded to Lily and motioned her to follow. She quickly began to talk. "I'm pregnant. A tom, he called himself Elre and he attacked me. I don't want this but I don't know what to do. I'm scared." (Super rushed, school almost over :/)

No Lost. I don't want any reminders of THAT past of his. It was his *second* original name and the most common. I like Missing more ^^ good luck with the planning! I'm planning things already for BC that I hopefully won't be klled for. Hehe. We aren't really dating (though if he asked me out, I'd say yes in a heartbeat) but l really really like him. He's a year older and mature luckily. He doesn't want to rush anything either so we're both being patient. :D hard for me cause he's a senior and going to college next year and I feel like l'm gonna die next year without him. Boo! Things have been going down and down and down in a drain that's why I've been toying with the idea. I can't now without breaking a promise to John. But as bad of an option, it was still there...

Okay, l'm just gonna come out and sort of tell you my idea :D So before Ebon's death, he had his memories returned. Yay for him/me! That resulted in many mixed feelings within him, remembering his shady past :) and his feelings for several cats. Long story behind that. Anyway, he ended up at the DF and l was wondering if it was plausible for cats to escape the DF and either become their original self again as "living" within their own body or embody/take over another cat to escape the DF. I know escaping any of that would be VERY hard and uncommon but it's never happened ever within the system (and l truely miss my little Strikers) so do you think it is possible? With enough work at it? Or something? Dang, and l forgot that nickname while writing his bio. -_-

City-nowhere near. How about a village? It'll be easier to find Missing and Deercloud (and Aeget and Kagero) near a village than a city. Also, can you go to "grasslands" second result and explain their part in this please? I'm gonna forget before I finish typing knowing my memory :D we're in the first result if you feel like stalking us. Who is rping the kittypet? Christmas music sucks. Panda can't attack all the Clans. Down like four members now. Arget, Kag, Jay, Missing all either gone or inactive. Sunday, not gonna even be in state so update me on what actually happens please. I'll try to be on Friday but no promises. Tomorrow is insane so I'll be on when I can, likely just that evening. Thursday you can expect me in the evening. Dont know anything more. Might end up working on my stary though in the coming nights, and the guide again.

Oh dude that's rough. I'm sorry. Maybe it was just the moment? I mean I get called way worse than POS in the moment but mom always comes around and I know she still loves me. And haha umm ya Lily isn't really receptive to that new hope right now so she might not be very grateful! Just a warning! :) Thanks for that though! Also, l think l got the kits set up minus rp'rs. Strykekit: tom, black, green-grey eyes, larger. Dragonkit: tom, brown tabby, green eyes, medium. -kit: shekit, light grey tabby, blue eyes, runt. I want an unpopular name for the she so ideas would be great. I'm weird and hate common names :D so no River, Blue, Hawk, Sky, etc. And hopefully nothing already seen at camp. I get confused enough with one person rp'ing someone. That and l need to get some actual sleep sometime. And, see other post below to reply to.

Also, never read that series. I know DF is inactive, I rp there, but the 17th (when I'd last posted there) was when I was last active. I'm working on finding a few new peeps when I can. I'm trying to drop off some non-Pact Clan rps first. Minus Pandemonium obviously. And it was actually not thought out at all. I made this decision minutes before finding somewhere to write that. Wrote it on the fly. Guessing I did a good job using rhetoric if it was this effective. Also, if you REALLY want to know where Pandemonium is (it's just a camp for the actual members though) I can tell you. Everything at "panda fall" was, however, well thought out. And I'll eventually fix up the typing errors. Also, there are challenges that they can try to achieve for special titles. Maybe holding a member for xyz days can be part of some of them or something. I haven't fully set up the challenges themselves yet. And maybe this time I addressed everything you writ...~Rosepetal &hearts~

Requesting a slight switcheroo. Instead of directly running into the party (because I'm sure you'd kill Missing on sight), maybe instead you could catch their scent as you try to chase the monster, making you give up and follow them. I was thinking of leading them to the camp is why, where the dogs (sadly) are and maybe you can come save the day. :D lol

Hey girl! I'm sorry to hear that it's so su<_>cky. :( But that's nice to have a bf! U have found rpers for both Crystalpaw and Rosepetal! Crystal is with Lionpaw and Rose is with Luckykit. I didn't give Missingmoon to anyone since his character is almost too complex for anyone else. I'm working on rpers for Strykekit, Dragonkit, and Zionkit!
