More About This Book

Overview

Cain Hawkins is a master at suppressing his desires. After all, he's been doing it for more than a century. What Cain wants more than anything is a man to love, but he knows that no matter how much he craves it, it can never be. Cain is a Naverto demon, and to desire another man is more than forbidden, it is an act that will bring about his death. Cain keeps to himself, working with abused horses on a small patch of land, all on his own.

Then Cain's brother makes a request he can't refuse.

Luke Forrester just wants a job and a place where he can recover from a brutal beating. He dreams of a ranch where he can work with the horses he loves so much. He can't let the fact that he's had a crush on Cain for more than two years matter. Luke is determined not to screw things up. He will prove to Cain it wasn't a mistake to hire him, and he won't allow the secret that he dreams about Cain every night interfere with his work.

But working and living in such close proximity can test the best of intentions, and when one kiss leads to something much, much more, everything changes. Cain must trust Luke completely. And together, he and Luke must find a way to fight for Cain's humanity and save him from his demon clan before he is found out and they are ripped apart forever.

-- CONTENT NOTE: This is an erotic romance novel and contains explicit acts of male/male loving. Also contains sex in shifted demon form, as well as a scene of violent assault and sexual torture at the hands of a villain.

-- (Falling is book two in the Hawkins Ranch series but was written/can be read as a stand alone title)

A sweet book of cowboy love and redemption

Despite the improbability of the plot, this is an engaging and highly evocative (hot!) gay book. The reader gets swept into the feelings of Cain, the owner of an abused horse rehabilitation ranch, who also happens to have a secret life as a Mr. Hyde-like, but beneficent, alter-ego demon who occasionally flies away. His ranch hand Luke is the ideal young mate who is gorgeous and hunky, and who holds Cain to his words constantly, being a highly moral young cowboy, earnest and hard-working. Everything he does seems right, and he is remarkably well-balanced mentally after having been severely abused in the past and enduring further injury during the course of the story. He is the endearing martyr of the book, the kind of young man anyone wants to spend the rest of his life with. Cain is the most complex character, though, a virgin demon whose soul is one hundred seventy-five years old. But his reactions to sex are those of a teenager, ultimately refreshing to an old queen like myself. Many of the conversations in the book are unrealistically cumbersome, and certainly not in the vernacular of a small Montana town. In the story's perfect world, most of the townsfolk in the book are completely non-judgmental about Cain and Luke's increasingly public gay relationship, which is a stretch in a cowboy community, but also kindly refreshing. It is a feel-good book, with its share of drama and unexpected events interspersed with very hot sex scenes. It makes me want to go back to my early years of growing up on a farm in the mountain West, and of idealizing love and trying to find ways to make it happen.

    Tear jerker

I have never cried over a book until this one. This story was very emotional. Luke and Cain's story is my favorite of this series. Cameron Dane was born to write romance. I highly recommend this book.
