Overview

Like most women, whether they've chosen the Fortune 500 career path or have had five kids by 35, Anna David wondered if she'd made the right choices. Then she came upon the book Sex and the Single Girl by Helen Gurley Brown, Cosmopolitan's fearless leader from the mid-sixties to the late nineties. Immediately connecting with Gurley Brown's unique message of self-empowerment combined with femininity, Anna vowed to use Sex as a lesson plan, venturing out of her comfort zone in the hope of overcoming the fears and insecurities that had haunted her for years. Embarking on a journey both intensely personal and undeniably universal, she becomes adventurous and spontaneous—reviving her wardrobe and apartment, taking French lessons, dashing off to Seville, and whiling nights away with men she never would have considered before. In the process, she ends up meeting the person really worth changing for: herself.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
In love with a married man, the author, a dating expert and writer, is shattered by the heartbreak. Seeking guidance and solace from the bookstore relationship aisle to help her recover and break bad patterns, she stumbles upon Helen Gurley Brown's seminal 1962 book Sex and the Single Girl and is hooked. David finds it full of tips on how a woman can achieve an appreciation for herself and gratitude for being unattached if she wants to be. It "was giving me a hopeful message combined with a realistic plan... to break down the walls I've erected." David embarks on a year-long project to remake herself, trying to conquer the fear and resistance that has gotten in her way. She starts with online dating and moves on to transforming her home into a place that's inviting, embracing cooking for herself, upgrading her wardrobe and traveling on her own to a country where she doesn't speak the language. There's no question that some of David's pursuits are silly (her philosophies on bras; chasing down Brown's vitamin guru), and Brown, who wasn't opposed to anorexia, isn't always a great role model. Nevertheless, the author's all-out commitment makes for a thoughtful chronicle with inspiring lessons in personal growth and building a life one loves from the inside out. (Oct.)

    Sex and the Single Babe

In "Falling for Me" Anna David finds herself questioning her life's choices. On one hand she's a successful writer and media personality yet she goes home to a painfully empty apartment at night. She watched as her friends get married and have kids wondering when/if her turn will ever come. Then Helen Gurley Brown's "Sex and the Single Girl" comes to the rescue. David decides to see if the 1960s feminist classic can still help in the 21st century.
As it turns out the book sends Anna on a variety of missions, adventures, and chores in a quest to make herself a more attractive package to "the right" man. This makes for great reading as David's sense of humor makes even some of the painful stuff a joy to read. "Falling for Me" is a mile-post in David's growth as a writer because she never shies away, or avoids the ugly stuff in her life as she tells her story. These revelations are important as the reader watches her grow as a person. This is risky and brave thing to do. It pays off. "Falling for Me" is an above average metamorphosis piece, and it can be enjoyed by men as well as women.
Anna David shares a narrative that will have you laughing, yelling, shaking your head, and feeling good in almost every chapter. Worth reading.

    Self-help in cognito

This book will entertain and transform you without you realizing it. It's self-help without the lectures and rainbows.

Highly Recommended! Anna does it again!

Every book Anna writes I am more impressed with her skills as a writer and her ability to connect with the audience of whom she writes for. Falling for Me, was an incredibly well written book, as Anna's journey to self improvement and self understanding, leads her through many interesting experiences. It takes a courage to write a Memoir like this that is so raw. Anna leads us through her journey from tears to laughter, from her darkest times to her triumps. This book is about decisions, both good and bad. Hilarious dating site experiences, speed dating, steamy romances, and conquering fears. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has ever doubted themselves as it was quite inspirational to read. Also, don't let the title fool you, men can learn a lot from this book as well, I know I did.
