Shawn Grady has again hit one out of the ballpark with a captivating plot, believable characters, and a fast pace that doesn't stop. First-rate action and thrills set against the backdrop of spectacular Desolation Wilderness. Falls Like Lightning has a hero firefighter, a single mother pilot, a sick child, and a mystery needing solving. When put all together, it makes for a stay-up past bedtime read.

This book was great....I feel though that it took a little too long to get to the 'main' points...but all in all it was a good book, and I would pick it up and read it again!
the characters were well portrayed, and the author did a good job conveying emotions.
~I received this book from Bethany House Publishers, and was asked to write a review on how I felt about the book whether it was positive or negative.

Smoke Jumpers in the middle of a forest fire started by lightning... acres and acres on fire and towns in danger. Enter the good guys - the ones that clear the path to stop the fire... but is that all they are there to do? Who are the good guys and who are the bad guys and how many of them will die before it is all over? A legend of a hidden cache of gold might just be enough to make the best people bad. Elle is the pilot in the middle of everything on a mission of her own - to save her daughter and find her missing father. Her blast from the past is Silas who ran out on her 7 years ago and has now shown back up. After everything they went through can Elle forgive and forget?
This book is a wild ride from page one and I spent a lot of time trying to figure out the good guys and the bad guys. No one is immune from demise, which as a reader is always nice because the book is unpredictable. Really enjoyed this one and the heart pounding journey it took me on!

"Smokejumper Silas Kent never expected to see pilot Elle Westmore again. In fact, reuniting makes him realize what a mistake he made all those years ago. But before he has a chance to try to make amends, he's called to lead a new crew into battle against a massive fire in the Sierra Nevadas. And then things go very wrong, very quickly. This was a different sort of read for me. I don't ever remember reading a story about smoke jumpers, and actually I am not sure I knew what a smoke jumper was before reading this story. I knew there were firefighters who go in and fight the major forest fires, but I honestly didn't realize there were men who are dropped in to fight the fires by cutting down trees etc. So not only did I get an action packed story but I also learned something new which is always a bonus.
The main characters in this one are Silas Kent a smoke jumper and Elle Westmore a pilot who drops smoke jumpers into the heart of a fire. Silas and Elle have a history together, but parted ways. Their paths cross again when when she takes an assignment to fly a smoke jumping crew out of Redding, CA to the Desolation Complex in the Sierra Nevada's to battle a raging fire. Soon though they realize there is more going on in those mountains than just the fires, there is cache of gold and some of the men on the smoke jumping crew is on a mission to recover it!
What a fast paced read. Elle was someone who had alot on her plate. She has the responsibility of taking care of her five year old daughter Maddie, while doing a very demanding job. I thought the little twist about her short marriage to Maddie's father was quite interesting. Silas seemed to have grown quite a bit from being someone who ran from a serious relationship to wanting to take care of Elle.I really got hooked on the characters from the beginning pages and became anxious to see how things would work out.
There is plenty of page turning action, with romance, suspense mystery and drama woven together with a christian message woven in to keep you reading until the final page.
While this is the first time I have ever read anything by Shawn Grady, it certainly wont be my last. I really enjoyed his writing style, his vivid descriptions and suspense filled story makes this book a real winner!

Action. Fire. Planes. Drama. Fire. Smokejumpers. Adventure. Suspense. Murder. Fire. And a little romance thrown in for good measure. Oh yes, did I mention fire and firefighting? If this description of Falls Like Lightning, Shawn Grady's latest book, doesn't grab your interest, check your pulse! The third book by Grady is just as captivating, edge-of-your-seat drama as his first two: Through the Fire and Tomorrow We Die.
From the back cover:
"Smokejumper Silas Kent never expected to see pilot Elle Westmore again. In fact, reuniting makes him realize what a mistake he made all those years ago. But before he has a chance to try to make amends, he's called to lead a new crew into battle against a massive fire in the Sierra Nevadas.
And then things go very wrong, very quickly.
A suspicious engine explosion forces the crew to parachute early while Elle barely survives a crash landing. Silas reaches the ground safely, but in the beginning a desperate race to reach the downed plane, he soon realizes he has more to fear than just a raging forest fire."
Writers are "taught" to write about what they know. Shawn brings over a decade of experience as a firefighter and paramedic to his writing. That experience gives an authenticity to his writing, putting the reader right in the middle of the scenes. And speaking of scenes, the last one.well, I won't give it away. but it's the perfect ending!
Men will enjoy Shawn's books because of the action and adventure and women will love them because of the romance. I highly recommend Falls Like Lightning!

Falls Like Lightning by Shawn Grady is a fast-paced novel about a smokejumper and a pilot trying to survive against both man and nature in the Desolation Wilderness in the Sierra Nevadas. Silas Kent loves his job fighting fires, but he's still struggling with his feelings for Elle Westmore even though he left her six years ago. He's suddenly forced to face those long-buried emotions when Elle is assigned as his pilot for him and a brand new crew to jump into the wilderness to fight a fire that is beginning to rage out of control. What Silas and Elle don't know is that their crew has a completely different mission in mind, and they aren't afraid to sacrifice anyone to achieve it. Falls Like Lightning has a stunning opening line that will quickly pull readers in: Heaven banished Lucifer in one air-rending fissure. Grady's books always make me long for a sequel, not that he doesn't end his stories well, he does! I just come to care about the characters so much, I'm not ready to let them go. Grady tries to pack a bit too much into this action-packed suspense novel. Between the bad guys search for gold, Silas and Elle's past, Elle's search for her missing father, and her daughter Maddie's health issues, it seems like an awful lot of subplots to pack into less than 300 pages, and it strains imagination for every single issue to be resolved so neatly. Grady is a strong and imaginative writer who is taking Christian fiction into new lands, but I wish this novel had focused only on Silas and Elle vs the bad guys; that would have been plenty of excitement and kept the thrills coming. Was this review helpful? If you're a fan of fire-fighters, smoke jumpers or pilots who run the risk of helping either fight fires in the forests, then Falls Like Lightning is for you. Two separate stories collide as Elle fights her demons from the past when she is called to be a pilot for the latest fires in Lake Tahoe. More experienced than anyone else over the terrain, she accepts the job. Little does she know it will involve flying over the same area where her father's plane crashed and was never found.
Silas Kent doesn't realize that Elle is about to become his pilot for the latest fire-fighting he's been called up to deal with. Dealing with a past relationship that didn't end well for her, he feels pulled in making amends with her why he left so many years ago. What he doesn't plan on is that she has a daughter who is very ill and seeking a diagnosis to help determine the cause for her seizures.
In the midst of these fires, a band of fire-fighters has come across the Independence Gold, that will make all of them rich beyond their wildest dreams and they have been called into the area where the mine is located to fight the fire. Only the two people on board they weren't counting on were Elle and Silas.
I received this book compliments of Christian Fiction Blog Alliance for my honest review and LOVED it. I could actually feel the heat from the fires surrounding them and the raging smoke filling the air. I felt the author has such an eye for details that make this story every bit as believable as if you were watching the latest on the news instead of reading a great fictional story. This one rates a scorching 5 out of 5 stars. This is my second book by Shawn Grady and loved this one as much as the first.
