It is a mystery why Simon de Montfort's name is not as instantly recognizable as those of Charlemagne and Richard the Lionhearted. The histories of France and England were significantly shaped by the causes he espoused and the battles he fought. Penman, a writer whose fidelity to historical detail is matched by her gift for narrative, makes Simon, Earl of Leicester, one of her central characters in this sweeping, dramatic saga set in the 13th century. The novel initially suffers from a dual focus, however, since Penman is equally concerned with the descendants of Llewelyn Farr of The Sunne in Splendour, who united the Welsh lords in an uneasy peace. The lives of highborn English, Welsh and French families intersect and painfully collide through complex ties of royal kinship: Montfort's wife, Nell is sister to King Henry III, one of England's most incompetent monarchs. Hot-tempered, high principled and ``the most celebrated soldier in Christendom,'' Montfort enters into bitter conflict with his brother-in-law, becoming leader of the barons who oppose Henry's irresponsible leadership. Henry is forced to accept the Oxford Provisions that limit his power and affirm the rights of English citizens, but after two decades of intrigue, internecine conflict, shifting alliances and full-fledged civil war, Henry's son Edward Plantagenet prevails in the bloody battle of Evesham. For her third historical novel, Penman focuses on the mid-13th-century reign of England's Henry III and stories of those who opposed that inept king. A main detractor is French-born Simon de Montfort, Earl of Leicester, who leads the fight for parliamentary restrictions on the monarch, and later becomes Henry's brother-in-law through marriage to Eleanor, Countess of Pembroke. She emerges as a major figure, as does a distant relative by marriage, Llewelyn ap Gruffydd, who fights for supremacy in Wales. A promised genealogy should sort out the family relationships as well as the Welsh names.     Really Interesting

    The characters are really interesting, but it does deal more with the events in England than in Wales. I found it compelling and very difficult to put down--another of Penman's adictive reads.

    Historical and well written

    I really enjoyed the character development. From what I know of this time period, which I am still learning, I found the characters to be true to themselves and to be exciting to read. Ms. Penman does a great job taking the reader from the English court to the Welsh lands and across the channel to the French court while tying it all together. I have enjoyed all of the books in this series and this one is enjoyable, too.

    Okay, but I liked Here be Dragons much more. I just did not find Simon de Montfort's story that interesting. I loved it when the story focused on Wales and Llewelyn and his brother.

    Penman's the best

    Even when you know the historical events and their outcome, one just can't help but get caught up in the intrigue - the book is still a "page turner" and like Penman's other books, I just couldn't put it down. Until I started reading her novels, never did I have a full understanding of when the events happened and what led to the events, the rebellions, who was who in each member of the royal court - she brings all the figures in history to life. I will read all of Penman's books - so she'd better keep writing. I've said this about her other books - they should be required reading - she does an excellent job in weaving the fiction into thehistorical facts.

    Hail to the Haunting deMonfort Legacy

    Falls the Shadow seemlessly draws the reader into the world of King Henry's England, integrating the danger of that world (i.e. sudden violent death and the importance of maintaining royal favor among nobles)with the timeless beauty of a true love story (Nell and Simon, Ellen and Rob). Layered throughout is the constant back drop of violence, war and conquest that permeated everything and everyone in this world. From the crusades to war with the French to civil war to the conquests of Wales..the reader tastes and smells and touches the blood and the blood shed. This makes the characters real in their vulnerability-- prone as they are to sudden violent young death. Yes, almost without exception the Men of Henry and Edward's England, were fighting for something. In reviewing the history of the times, one can't always remember what the fight is about -- but rather that there was indeed a fight. Enter Simon. Ahead of his time. A man born a noble and yet self made in England. Simon speaks of accountability and responsibility to all men. Simon fights and the reader knows what he is fighting for. Simon fights and the deMonforts stand together behind their husband's and father's conviction. No matter what. This is what makes their love story so enduring. Their family story so compelling. The final chapter so tragic. After reading Here Be Dragons I thought there was no way I could love a sequel more. Yet Penman has a way of inviting the reader into the hearts and souls of her characters. This makes it very easy to care about them as they are introduced and subsequently developed. I grieved for the deMonforts, for example, just as I wept for Joanna in Here be Dragons. I've just begun reading the reckoning and I already love Hugh. From what I understand, however, a return visit to Llewelyn is in order and I look forward to that as well. Great entertainment.

    just got done

    I just finished this awesome book! I was actually crying towards the end. I am just a sissy i suppose but this is a great book. Sharon Kay Penman has once again gotten my attention with great writing. Now just if i could figure out what order to read the rest of her books in.
