Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Joella Peterson
Schuette explains what families are and what families do together for fun in this addition to the "People" series. The simple sentences and large font size will help young children learn how to read. For example, the text on one page reads, "Juan and his mother eat ice cream." The facing page shows a photograph of a boy and his mother eating ice cream cones. The colorful pictures help readers by providing clues to the text they are reading (in this case, "ice cream"). The photographs show many different types of cultures, which will enable readers of all cultures to identify with the text. At the end of the book, Schuette includes a glossary to help define words that were introduced in the book: cousin, father, grandparent, mother, related, and uncle. With a seventy-five word count, readers will enjoy learning how to read with this book about families. Reviewer: Joella Peterson
