Gr 3-6-In five easy-to-read chapters, Greenberg introduces children to the major issues concerning the topical subject. He explains the differences between physical, emotional, and sexual abuse, as well as neglect and abuse of spouses, the elderly, and the disabled. There is no in-depth coverage here, but the book serves to provide examples of the different types of abuse so that children may be able to recognize it for themselves. What the author does well is make clear that family violence and corporal punishment are not ``normal'' behavior and are in fact criminal acts. Several case studies from the news are used effectively to illustrate the extent of the damage caused by family abuse such as the Cheryl Pierson and Lisa Steinberg cases. Full-color photos break up the text. The book will be useful for reports since so many statistics and case studies are mentioned, and will be helpful to kids who happen to pick it up while browsing.-Patricia A.
