Overview

Culled from the expert pages of Family Circle and Family Circle Home Crafts magazines, here are more than 100 fun and creative painting projects. Refurbish a garage-sale find, express your style on an unfinished piece, and add pizzazz to almost any item using sponging, stenciling, distressing, striping, and other techniques. Turn a plain cabinet into an elegant sideboard using faux tortoise finishing. Add a feminine touch to a basic chest with stenciled roses. Go wild painting animal prints on boxes, flowerpots, and even an end table. Use chalkboard paint to give a child furniture she can write on, and more!

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal - Library Journal
These two books consider the use of decorative paint finishes. Sloan (Modern Paint Effects; Paint Alchemy) presents a thorough treatment of decorative finishes. She begins with an illustrated overview of the techniques to be covered, which include colorwashing, marbling, woodgraining, stenciling, decoupage, wood finishes, and gilding. For each technique, she then explains the materials needed and furnishes clearly illustrated instructions, a detailed view of the effect, and examples of how the technique can be used on walls, furnishings, and decorative accessories. Also included for each technique is a section on pitfalls, typically overlooked in other paint technique books, making the treatment here especially useful for amateurs. Unlike Kerry Skinner's The Paint Effects Bible, whose format restricted the instructions to two pages, Sloan gives each finish enough space to provide clear coverage. Family Circle offers a plethora of projects for decorating furniture and decorative accessories. Unfortunately, no pictures are used to show how the techniques are accomplished, so amateurs will need a book like Sloan's before they have the confidence to tackle the more detailed projects. For its usefulness to both novice and experienced decorative painters, Sloan's book is highly recommended for any size public library collection, while Family Circle is recommended where there is a continued interest in painting projects.
