    Doesn't Sacrifice Taste or Nutrition

I'm always looking for ways to feed my family well on a budget and was happy to discover this cookbook full of recipes that promise to be inexpensive. The book starts with tips for saving money at the grocery store, how to streamline the preparation process, cooking efficiently, and tips for making extras to freeze for future meals. The author knows how to do this because there are 12 people in her family. I figure if she can do it well with that many children, I should be able to make some progress with just three of us left in my household.

The book contains 200 recipes, including dishes for breakfast and lunch, casseroles and oven meals, stir-fries and skillet meals, pasta, soups, stews and chilis; sides and salads, breads, muffins, and desserts; recipes for entertaining on a budget, and recipes for homemade pantry items such as baking mixes, seasoning mixes, etc. Some of the recipes have an ethnic flair using Indian or Ethiopian seasonings but there really wasn't any that I wouldn't be willing to try.

I made the Mexican Tortilla Skillet casserole and my family liked it well enough for me to make it again, but next time I'll use canned diced tomatoes instead of tomato puree as a personal preference. Otherwise the taste was good and it was inexpensive to make. I haven't done the math to know if I can really feed my family on $75 a week, but in looking over the recipes, it does seem that they can be made cheaply without sacrificing taste or nutrition, so this is a cookbook I'll refer to often while adjusting the ingredients according to my own family's tastes.

This would be a great cookbook for anyone who wants to make the most of their food budget whether they have a large family or not.
