Family is the one aspect of our life that we can not change. We can change our friends or jobs but family is an area we are born into. Most of us are not given an opportunity to choose our family members. Some may consider their families a blessing, others a curse. According to Audre Lorde, ¿The future of our earth may depend on the ability of all of us to identify and develop new patterns of relating across difference. The old definitions have not served us, nor the earth that supports us¿ (McGoldrick 1996). In Minuchin¿s book, ¿Family Healing: Strategies for Hope and Understanding,¿ he explains how secret and subliminal rules can place family members in uncomfortable roles. (Minuchin 1998). As a structural therapist, he uses a confrontational, yet compassionate approach attempting to stop the repetition of family patterns that cause tension between marital partners, as well as, parents and children as family members experiences different phases of life. As a future counselor in the field of Marriage and Family, this book is an excellent reference with real examples of issues common to families that come to therapy.
